Margarita Bergara Obituary

Margarita Bergara of New York, NY, died Thursday, October 2, 2008, surrounded by her family at St. Luke's Hospital in New York City. She was 87.

She was born in Utuado, Puerto Rico to the late Guadalupe and the late Fulgencio Montalvo on December 9, 1920 and moved to New York in 1949 where she lived until her death. She was married in 1956 to Luis Orlando Bergara, who died in 1974.

She was a homemaker who lived for over 40 years in the Stephen Wise Towers on the Upper West Side, and was active in the Tenants' Association and St. Gregory Church for many of those years.

She is survived by her children: Maggie Bergara and her husband, Bill Domanico of Rock Tavern, NY, Luis Angel Bergara of New York, NY and Diana Ivey and her husband, Terrence of Highland Mills, NY; two grandchildren, Christopher and Brian Ivey of Highland Mills, NY; her brother, Graciano Montalvo of Rancho Cucamonga, CA and numerous nieces and nephews in Puerto Rico and across the country.

She was predeceased by her husband, Luis Orlando Bergara and three brothers: Laureano, Pablo and Angel Montalvo.

Friends may call at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th St., New York City, on Sunday, October 5, from 2-5 & 7-9 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, October 6 at 10 a.m. at St. Gregory the Great Church, 144 West 90th St., with Father Joseph Darbouze officiating. Burial will follow at St. Raymond's Cemetery in the Bronx.

The family requests memorial donations in Margarita's name to be made, in lieu of flowers, to St. Gregory the Great School, 138 West 90th St., New York, NY 10024, Attn: Mrs. Gabella.
