Susan Thompson Obituary

Susan Amanda Thompson, a lifelong area resident and parttime resident of St. Augustine, FL, entered into eternal rest on October 6, 2008 after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer that began in 1993.

The daughter of the late Barbara Howell Bernard and John Bernard, she was born on November 3, 1944 in Middletown, NY. She was married for 35 years to Larry C. Thompson whom she wed on September 7, 1973 in Bloomingburg, NY.

Besides her family, friends and pets, Susan loved to travel. She spent many happy times traveling the world with her lifelong friends known as "The Lunch Bunch".

Susan was an active partner in Thompson Excavating Co., Inc., Bloomingburg, L and S Thompson and Sons of Bloomingburg and the Mt. Hope Training Facility in Mt. Hope. She retired as a real estate paralegal from Greenwald and Graubard Law Offices of Wurtsboro where she worked for over 20 years, as an executive paralegal for her longtime friend, Robert Graubard. Susan was a very avid fan of Harness Racing along with her trainer/husband. She owned many successful standardbred trotters and pacers and was also a member for over two decades of the United States Trotting Association.

Always enthusiastic to volunteer her spare time, she served for several years as a member of the Wurtsboro/Bloomingburg Free Library; the Methodist Church at Bloomingburg and was an elected official for the Village of Bloomingburg and served on several advisory committees for town and village government.

Survivors include her husband, Larry C. Thompson, of Otisville; her sons, Michael S. Thompson and his wife, Sandra of Middletown, and Christopher C. Thompson, of Falls Church, VA; two grandsons, Shawn Michael Thompson of Rocky Mount, NC and Zachary Lee, of Salem, VA; brothers and sisters, Peter Schott and his wife, Marge, of Oak Harbor, WA, Joan Garcia and her husband, Esteban, of Oceanside, CA, Patricia Hof and her husband, George, of Portland, TN, Margaret Sommerville and her husband, David of NC, Carol Peterson and her husband, Peter, of Dublin, CA, Charles Andrews and his wife, Elaine, of Mountain House, CA, James Andrews and his wife, Jan, of Galt, CA; brother-in-law, Russell Johnson, Sr., of Bloomingburg, NY; mother-in-law, Arlene Penney, of St. Augustine, Fl; sister-in-law, Laura Walsh and her husband, Edward of Alexandria, VA; brother-in-law, Frank Penney and his wife, Laurie of Dallas, GA, and several nieces and nephews. Susan had a very special relationship with Laura and Ed's children, Ryan, Colleen and Sean Walsh. She is also survived by her beloved pets, Mozart, Cosmo, Tanner & Bumper.

She was predeceased by her mother, her father, an infant son, Allen Charles, her sister, Kathleen Johnson and her beloved dogs, "Scrappy", "Bones" & "Sweetie" among others.

Visitation hours are from 5-8 p.m., Thursday, October 9, at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, 130 Highland Ave., Middletown, NY and on Friday, October 10 from 12-2 p.m. at Mountain View United Methodist Church, North Street, Bloomingburg.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 10 at 2 p.m., at the Mountain View United Methodist Church, North Street, Bloomingburg, NY. The Rev. Betty Beach Connell and the Rev. Rob Hewitt will co-officiate. Cremation will be private at the Cedar Hill Crematory, Middle Hope, NY. A memorial service will be held in Florida at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Susan's name to The Humane Society of Port Jervis/Deerpark, 202 Route 209, Port Jervis, NY 12771, the humane society of your choice or to The Hudson Valley Autism Society, 18 Jansen Road, Stone Ridge, NY 12484.

Our heartfelt appreciation of excellent care and unending concern are expressed to her doctor and friend, Dr. Charles Strober and his nursing staff and Dr. Robert Dinsmore and his entire staff, especially Sherry, also to our dear friend, Dr. Margaret Stacklum.
