Charles Schmitt Obituary

September 25, 1925 - October 15, 2008

Montgomery, NY

Charles W. Schmitt, a lifelong resident of Montgomery, NY, passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, in St. Luke's Hospital. Bill was a retired Postmaster of the Montgomery Post Office, and also retired from the Orange County Board of Elections. He was 83.

The son of the late Charles and Mary Fitzgerald Schmitt, he was born September 25, 1925 in Montgomery, NY.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church in Montgomery and the VFW. Bill was an avid baseball fan and he coached little league for 20 years. He was one of the founders of the Montgomery Little League. Bill enjoyed his morning coffee at McDonald's with his friends and will be missed.

Bill was a World War II Veteran - another man of the Greatest Generation who lived a quiet and exemplary, peaceful small town life as a civil servant following his wartime service as a Navy Corpsman. Despite many challenges and hardships, he and Jean, his wife of 59 years, raised three daughters and a son - all successful college graduates and excellent parents. Along with Jean, Bill showered their nine grandchildren with kindness and generosity. They remain his greatest joy, and will carry on his legacy in their own lives.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Jean; four children: Stephanie Kuhlow and her husband, Robert of Raleigh, NC, Jeffrey and his wife, Victoria of Esperance, NY, Colleen Saracino and her husband, Dino of Montgomery and Sue Ellen Crumblish and her husband, Mark of Dallas, TX. He is also survived by the nine grandchildren: Sasha, Lani, and Janel Kuhlow, Ryan and Jeffrey Schmitt, Noelle Fischer, Eamonn, Connor and Chandler Crumblish, as well as four sisters: Margaret Bartle, Mary Faulkner, Ann Kaufman, and Esther Manz.

Visitation will be Friday, October 17, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the Overhiser Funeral Home, 78 Union St., Montgomery, NY.

A funeral mass to celebrate Charles's life will be on Saturday, October 18, at 10 a.m. at Holy Name of Mary Church, 89 Union St., Montgomery, NY. Burial will be in Brick Church Cemetery in Montgomery, NY.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the charity of one's choice in memory of Bill.

Arrangements were made by Millspaugh Funeral Directors.
