Catherine Shofkom Obituary

Sidney - Catherine N. Shofkom, a resident of the N.Y.S. Veterans Home in Oxford, passed away Thursday, October 25, 2007 at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, N.Y. She was 83.

Born November 24, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Frances (Oram) Lakin in Market Harborough, England.

Upon finishing her schooling, she entered the English Land Army during World War II. Catherine married George Shofkom, on November 4, 1944 in Fleckney, England. They resided in Washingtonville, where she worked for the Salisbury Paper Mill. Nancy was also a member of the Salisbury Mills Fire Department Auxiliary. Most recently she was a resident of the N.Y.S. Veterans Home in Oxford, where she was a member of the Red Hat Society.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: Robert and Pamela Shofkom of the state of Florida and Richard and Gisela Shofkom of Sidney, N.Y.; sister and brother-in-law, Susanna and William Clements of England; five grandchildren: Heidi Dear, Elke Shofkom and Richard Shofkom, Jr., all of Sidney, N.Y., Robert Shofkom of Texas, and Stacia Saiani of Utah; five great-grandchildren: Laken, Sage, Isabel, Simon and Gabby, and nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Thursday, November 1, from 1 to 3 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, NY 13838. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m., with Pastor Ralph Hinman officiating.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Masonville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
