Lena Assunta Spano

Lena Spano Obituary

Milford, PA - Mrs. Lena Assunta Spano of Milford, Pa. died on Thursday, December 6, 2007 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. She was 86.

The daughter of the late Alfonso and the late Bettina Cacossa Ciaccio, she was born January 29, 1921 in Newburgh, N.Y. She was married to the late Nickolas Spano who predeceased her on February 19, 2000.

She was a member of St. Patrick's R.C. Church in Milford, Pa.

A family statement reads: "Lena was a loving mother and grandmother who "lived for her kids". She was not a teacher by trade, but she taught through her laughter and love. "Lee" was artistic throughout her life and took up painting in her 60´s and excelled at it. A devoted catholic, she loved her grandchildren and was a fantastic Italian cook. Lena valued her family and friendships, which showed by opening her home and kitchen daily to anyone who would stop by. Long after her children had grown and moved from the New Windsor homestead, their childhood friends would still visit to say hi to Mrs. Spano and sample whatever Italian meal was on the stove. Lena's love for her children was sometimes expressed as "Be careful," the last thing said before anyone left the house. Her devotion to her husband and church never ceased throughout her lifetime. As a team, Nick and Lee served each other and their family".

She is survived by: two daughters, Dr. Elizabeth "Liz" Hartey and her husband, Dr. Edward of Milford, Pa., and Annelee Lander of Beaverton, N.Y.; son, Dr. Nicholas Spano and his wife, Susan of Canton, Pa.; Brother, Clarence Ciaccio and his wife, Frances of Newport, Calif.; nine grandchildren: Elizabeth, Danielle and Nicholas Spano, Brescian and Bryce Lander, Taylor, Elyse, Jordan, and Spencer Hartey; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at Gray-Parker Funeral Home, 100 E. Main St., Port Jervis on Monday, December 10 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, December 11, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick's R.C. Church, Milford, Pa. with the Rev. Gerald Mullaly officiating. Burial will be at Milford Cemetery, Milford, Pa.

TO LENA'S FAMILY,
PLEASE ACCEPT MY SINCERE SYMPATHY IN THE LOSS OF YOUR MOTHER AND GRANDMOTHER. I AM A COUSIN WHO LIVED IN THE APARTMENT ON WILLIAM STREET BELOW YOUR MOM'S APARTMENT. AS A CHILD I REMEMBER THINKING WHAT A PRETTY LADY SHE WAS AND ADMIRED HER THEN, AND TROUGH THE YEARS I STILL HELD THAT ADMIRATION FOR HER.

SINCERELY MARIE
