Fred,
Its almost time for our 10 year reunion and so many of us wish you would be joining us on Saturday. However, while you may not be there yourself - your joy and laughter will be... found some old videos of you while making a video to play at the reunion. You may be gone, but you aren't forgotten.

I did not know Fred, but was so taken with what I read about him. I am writing to offer my heartfelt condolences to family members and friends. The next years will be very difficult; there will be so many unanswered questions for all of you. From all I read about Fred and his life, I believe that he was a special person and that you all will miss him very much.

I run camera on a show at Cox Communications called "In the News" with Craig Wright. Fred has been a long-time guest on the show and always a warm, welcomed presence. Whenever we knew Fred was going to be on the show we all lit up. The guy just had a natural, warm persona about him. His personality was infectious and he had a great sense of humor. When I found out about his passing I cried. He will be so missed. "In the News," and the rest of us too, will never be the same. I'm sure he's giving political advice to God right now. :-)

To the Hutchins family,
I have so many fond memories of Fred and have pondered what to say in a short version. He was a wonderful, caring good friend. I thank his mom, whom he loved dearly
for allowing us to share Fred. One thing for sure, we know that Fred's in Heaven organizing a mass voter registration drive for Barack Obama, Mark Warner and all other Democrats.
My condolences and prayers are with you now and always.

Freddie, I have thought about you everyday for the past few weeks. I am still mindboggled. I have debated and brainstormed over what to write in your guestbook, so I thought it would be my fondest memory. I remember when you first moved into Grandaddy's and I came to stay the night with Shelly, you drug us downstairs for the democrat stories and posters everywhere. Not a inch of wall was showing. Clinton was in office and from that moment, you turned me into a democrat. I may not have known what in the world I was talking about back then, but Freddie taught me to be a democrat and that's all that matter. I still laugh with thoughts that you are up there putting signs up for the democrats and Grandaddy is just cussing and saying how tacky they look. I can hear that loud laugh of yours now. Keep singing Freddie! We'll hold the fort down, down here, you hold it up, up there - We're going to miss you!!!!

Karen, Melissa and Family,
Words cannot express how sorry I am for all of you. There are so many stories I could tell you about Freddie in 7th grade, but one of my favorites is how he was always trying to get me to vote democrat. I can't think of Freddie without remembering his smile, wit, determination, and wonderful sense of humor. I am so happy that I got to talk to him recently and to see that he was the same sweet Freddie from 7th grade and still a true gentleman. My love and prayers are with you.

I remember once when Fred was about 7 years old, I was at their house and he was putting up signs in the yard. When I asked him what they said, he said, "Friends don't let friends vote Republican."
I will always remember Fred for his humor and unique spirit. He will be greatly missed.

Karen, Mellisa, Mitch: I am so deeply sorry for your loss. I LOVED Freddie! As soon as I met him I felt a deep connection to his heart. I always asked Dale how he was doing throughout the years. Karen and Melissa~
I was so touched by Freddie's memorial service. The comments made about him were astounding and must have filled you both with such pride. I have the greatest respect for Freddie and all that he was able to accomplish in 26 years. I remember being amazed by his determination even when he was a child. He will be missed terribly by so many who had the pleasure of knowing him. May Gods' grace and strength be with you both. I love you and will always be here for you.

I first met Fred when we worked on Mark Warner's 2001 Governor's race. It was clear even then that a love of politics, and a devotion to public service, were central parts of Fred's life. We crossed paths many times since then, and he always had a smile and a kind word. Losing Fred is a loss for all of Virginia, and he will be missed.

Karen....I did not know Freddie but wanted to offer my condolences for such a devastating loss in your heart and soul. I can't imagine the pain you’re enduring at this time but can only imagine how tremendous it must be. Being a Mom myself of twin boys who will soon be 26 years old, it frightens me that anything can happen that can change your life forever. I hope and pray that time will bring you comfort and memories of your son will bring you smiles and laughter. God Bless

To quote Mudcat whenever some of us would mention Freddy, "he's the best"! I can see you now, Freddy, standing out there with me and Mud and John Wood looking at that race truck in the garage by Mud's creek. I would always call you up when I was down because you, like me, would laugh at just about everything, no matter how sad a topic it was, yet never forgetting the seriousness. I always wish that I had the courage like you to take some of those road turns just a little faster! Save me a spot in Heaven if you can, just like you always saved me a seat at the table downtown when I was running late.

August 3, 2008

Dear Karen and Mitch,
Fred will be missed so very, very much by me and everyone who ever had the good fortune to know or meet him. I am so proud to be able to say I was his uncle and to have shared in his life with you and "MEL." Freddie was a gifted person and a talented young man, with the "heart of a lion." I could go on for days about my love for Freddie, but I will close this note by saying how Fred set a high standard for us all to live by, and that a mother like Karen, raised a unique son that lived life to it's fullest. "Here's to Fred!" I love you.

I first met Fred when he worked at Kroger. We used to talk politics. I watched him develop through the years as a student at Roanoke and also as a campaigner and staffer. A few years ago he and I paired up as a team in a golf tournament at Thunder Valley. We won a prize. Fred was the better golfer. I just followed his lead. The night Jim Webb won his victory, I, Mudcat, and Fred watched the returns above Awful Arthurs downtown at 2:00 AM. Through the years I talked to him many times about politics. He has been my guest at City School to talk to my students about the opportunities for young people to work in Public Service. Pam and I were honored to know him and we join with so many who knew him and respected him as a leader who cared deeply about his family, his community and his nation.

Fred we are all going to miss you.

When my wife and I first moved to Blue Ridge, he was the first neighbor to stop and welcome us to the neighborhood. After a few moments of introduction, we realized that we all had attended middle school together. We remember Freddie as a wonderful, caring, and accomplished individual. Even in middle school, he was passionate about politics and what it meant to be an American. What makes his passing so very sad is the fact that we will never know what he would have achieved. We always assumed that one fine day his name would be on the presidential ballot.

We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. May God bless and comfort you at this time.

Fred and I worked together as Pages in Richmond when we were 14 or so. Even then, I knew he was destined for a life in politics. His enthusiasm and commitment were unparalleled. He was a friendly "teddy bear" guy and I will always remember him fondly. I am so sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry for your loss.

Freddie was a wonderful man and I will greatly miss his smiling face and his cute laugh. I met him a few years ago when he came into my barber shop in Blue Ridge for a haircut. He became and good friend and he was a lot of help to my fiancee and I. He encouraged me to get professional help in a time I was having a nervous breakdown. I am greatful he came into my life and had such a caring heart. If it hadn't been for his advice I don't know where I would be now.

I want you to know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Karen, Melissa, Bob, Brad, Chad and the rest of the family:

I first met Freddie when he was about 7 or 8 years old at a Children’s camp with Green Ridge Baptist Church and Pleasant Hill Baptist at Emory and Henry. Freddie then was already becoming a great guy. He was already strong in his Democratic stands thanks to his wonderful grandfather. I became Freddie's Youth and Children’s leader a couple years later. I spent many of days and evenings at Uncle Bob's house playing ball and just hanging out. Freddie was such an inspiration and took alot of grief about his stands on politics but Freddie stood strong. I told him that one day he would be a great Senator or Governor of this great state. Freddie will be dearly missed here on this earth. What is our loss is Heaven's gain. So my friend Freddie this is not a good bye; this is just a good night wish for you. For I know I will see you again in Heaven. For the family; keep your eyes focused on Jesus for He is our Great Comforter. He will carry you through these days and times. Know that you guys are all loved and that we are here for you.

Fred was the finest young political mind that I knew and such an exceptional young man. I lived two doors down from him at Roanoke College, and we spent hours talking Democratic politics during and after class. I'll always remember him staying up late in the political science lab, calling homes and working so hard for our country and state. You'd never go in there without seeing Fred doing campaign work for the people he believed in. This country needs more people like him. Like all of you, I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to the family, for Fred was someone who brought out the best in everyone.

Life remains a mystery, but we can always remember the laughter shared with him.

May God be with you family during this trying time. The people of America feel some of your pain but there is no way we can identify with the magnitude of sorrow of which you feel. His leadership and keen intellect will be missed.

Melissa,
I cheered with you many years ago and just found out about your brother's passing. I am so sorry! Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. May you always remember all the good times you shared with your brother.

I attended a leadership program with Fred in 2002 and although we did not spend a ton of time together it was still a pleasure to have met him. It's hard to fathom that something like this has happened, I always thought Fred would be running for office sometime. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Karen,
Words cannot be put to paper to describe my heartfelt sympathy. I think of you often and I lift up a prayer to the Lord Jesus, to give you peace and to carry you and your family through this. We've shared so many stories about our kids and I will surely miss updates on Freddie. If you need anything you can call on me day or night. I will continue to pray for all of you, especially you. As a mom, I know the connection you had and will continue to have with Freddie through your Spirit. Continue to look to the Lord he is our only hope and strength at times such as these.
With Love and many Prayers!

This is such a horrible tragedy that has hit many people far and wide. Fred was an amazing person who had an infectious laugh. He was always the life of the party and if you were feeling down just talking with him would brighten your day. He was so active in politics that not only will the Lord Botetourt family miss him but the entire country. He was an exceptional human being. May God Bless him and watch over his family in this their time of need.
