Kevin Bryant Obituary

Kevin John Bryant died on June 8, 2008 in Loveland, CO as a result of injuries suffered on a rafting trip with friends on the Poudre River. At the time of his death, hundreds of family and friends were attending a prayer vigil for Kevin at Batavia High School. A lover of life, he fought a brief but tenacious struggle to live. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends.

Born on July 15, 1986 to John and Theresa Bryant, Kevin treasured (and teased) his younger brothers, Patrick, Michael, David; and sister, Mary Kate, who together with their parents formed an exceptionally close-knit, Christian family. Kevin was a member of Holy Cross Church, where he received the Sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation. He attended the Batavia schools and was a proud Bulldog of Batavia High School, playing varsity basketball for three years. A passionate and dedicated player, he will be remembered for his team leadership, and his beaming, sweet smile.

Kevin recently graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University, where he was a four-year Titan basketball player and a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Kevin's teammates, brothers, friends, and fans became his extended family in Bloomington, IL. He had accepted a job in finance and was scheduled to start in July.

Kevin was a powerful and kind force. In his short 21 years, he was a blessing not only to his parents and brothers and sister, but also to a large extended family, including his grandparents, Jack and Pat Abell and Maureen Bryant; his godfather, David Bryant; his aunts and uncles, Mike and Janice Abell, Marty and Rocky Rode, Tim Abell, Sue Bryant and Larry Fox, Sandie and Tom Gibbs, Mike and Ursula Bryant, Pat and Debbie Bryant, Mary and Chuck Lowry, Fred and Diane Bryant, Jay and Janet Bryant, Molly Bryant, Mark and Heather Bryant; Kevin is also survived by numerous cousins, whom he loved spending time with; Kevin is also survived by his girlfriend, Kourtney Tarvin. He was preceded in death by his grandpa, Fred Bryant.

Kevin is scheduled to be remembered and celebrated at a wake service on Thursday, June 12 from 2 - 8 pm at The Healy Chapel, 370 Division Street, Sugar Grove, IL 60554, (630) 466-1330. A funeral mass will take place on June 13, at 11:00 A.M. at Holy Cross Church, 2300 Main Street, Batavia, IL, (630) 879-4750 with visitation from 10 A.M. until 11 A.M. Fr. Charles Reichenbacher O.S.B. will officiate. Interment will be at West Batavia Cemetery.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the IWU Kevin Bryant Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 2900, Bloomington, IL 61702, or to Misericordia, 6300 North Ridge Ave., Chicago, IL 60660.

I know we have not seen each other for nearly 40 years but, a few nights ago, I was watching WLS 7 News and saw the story about Kevin's tragic passing. I looked at his picture and I immediately thought he looks like John Bryant.

Unfortunately, the next morning, my inclination was verified by the Beacon News.

Dear Bryant Family-
Our hearts and prayers go out to you at this time. We will never forget the amazing person Kevin was. Even when we babysat Kevin and the kids years ago,his character shined through. He was always so loving towards his siblings and always cared about those around him. It was an honor to watch Kevin grow up into such a great young man. Everytime we saw Kevin he always went out of his way to be kind. Our son looked at Kevin as a hero, and he was,and will always be,a hero to so many. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers. We will be praying for the comfort and strength that only God can provide during this time of grieving.

John, Theresa, and Family; It seems like yesterday when John and I played pool at the Lake Street house and canoed on the Fox River. Knowing the Bryant family for a lifetime makes this heartbreaking beyond words. Having a tie with Kevin as a Fraternity Brother of Sigma Chi and as a graduate of IWU provides in a small way, some sense of what Kevin experienced at IWU. We walked the same sidewalks in the quad, studied in the same classrooms, and played and viewed sporting events in the same arenas. We both knew the strong lifetime bond of the Brotherhood of the Sig House.
Kevin; "In hoc signo vinces". As God welcomes you into heaven, know we mourn your loss and cry with your family.
May God grant the Bryant family peace and understanding. With deepest sympathies and prayers from the State of Georgia.

Dear John, Theresa and family: I am deeply saddened to hear about this tragedy. Our family (Kane's) began to pray for Kevin as soon as we heard what had happened. Bryant Family,
It feels like just yesterday that I was going to summer open gyms at IWU before my freshman year, and already Kevin was proving himself as the type of guy we will all remember him to be. He was an incredibly tough kid, a hard worker, a great leader, and on top of all that, a friend. The IWU basketball family, and the rest of the people that KB was able to positively impact in his life will sorely miss him. I personally owe a lot to KB on the basketball court, but the way that I will most remember him is as a loyal friend and a teammate who would have done anything at any time for anyone that he loved. It is an honor to have known, and had my life changed by, your son Kevin.

Jenny Vance

June 11, 2008

To the Bryant family,

My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to each of you at this time. I can't fathom how hard this is, but be sure to know that your son and brother was greatly loved and admired by so many. I went to high school with Kevin, was one year younger and never got the chance to get to know him, but so many people I care about did get to know him and i'm positive that he was the light in many peoples lives and enriched all the lives he came in contact with. I hope, at this time, you will lean on family and friends as you celebrate and remember Kevin's life. He will never be forgotten and neither will your family.

Be well.

Love

June 11, 2008

To the Bryant Family,

Our son, Sean, played basketball with Kevin at IWU this past year. Although we didn't get to know him that well, Sean has told us that he is sure there will be no player who made him work as hard as KB. He was the ultimate team player, leader and role model for the Titans, especially the freshmen. The hardest worker on the court, KB was also a great friend off the court and really helped the younger guys with the transition to college life. I know that his friendship and respect meant a great deal to our son, and we are grateful for the time that Sean was able to spend with KB.

While words cannot take away your pain, please know that your son's spirit lives on in the lives of those he has touched.

He had a love for life and a passion for basketball that was undescribeable. Kevin has made an impact on so many lives at such a young age and I am so lucky to have known him!
