Don Fado Obituary

Rev. Don Fado

December 8, 1933 - July 17, 2025

Sacramento, California - "Beloved" may be a word over-used in memorials to loved ones. In the case of the Reverend Don Fado of Sacramento, it truly applies to those who knew him as family, as friend, as pastor, and as a leader for social justice. Don loved people and loved hearing their stories. He lived his faith, not just working as a pastor in the United Methodist Church, but in his everyday life. To Don, all people are beloved children of God, equally entitled to be respected and loved.

Don grew up in Redding, California and earned his bachelor's degree at College of the Pacific, where he was student body president and where he met Jean, college opera star and his future wife. Don followed a call into ministry, earning a master's degree in divinity at Boston University School of Theology, a school known to focus on social activism.

He started his career as pastor at Sierra Vista UMC in Fresno, serving in several churches including Wesley UMC in Fresno and retiring from St. Mark's UMC in Sacramento. His commitment to social justice guided his personal and pastoral life. In 1999, defying the UMC's anti-gay rules, Don convened 95 active and retired UMC pastors to bless the holy union of two lesbian parishioners before a full house at the Sacramento Convention Center.

After retiring in 2001, Don segued into direct community activism. He enlisted others to create Family Promise of Sacramentoaimed at keeping unhoused families togetherand also served as a board member at Sacramento Loaves and Fishes.

Ministry and community service were just parts of Don's very full life, especially his 69-year partnership with Jean raising four children, one of whom followed him into ministry, and welcoming their spouses and offspring. He and Jean loved travel and led two dozen tours to six different continents, including 7 to the Holy Land. He said he could not have followed his life's path without Jean's support and wise counsel.

Don was considered one of the finest preachers in the UMCoften preaching without notes and always with an expansive view of God's love that came alive in his sermons. Even after retiring, he was a frequent guest preacher, delivering a sermon less than two weeks before his sudden passing at home at age 91. He was alive and active, full of warmth and humor and faith to his last days, and will be greatly missed.

Don is survived by Jean and four children, Sue Addington (Ron) of Sacramento, CA, Donna Fado Ivery (Hubert) of Richmond, CA, Patty Fado of Sacramento, CA, and David Fado (Kelly) of Arlington, VA, 11 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, two sisters, and innumerable friends, congregants, and community members.

Don's life will be celebrated Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 11 a.m. at St. Marks United Methodist Church in Sacramento. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to Family Promise of Sacramento and Sacramento Loaves and Fishes.

In life we receive death, not by choice but through the sands of the hourglass. There are humans who quietly walk the path to those in need. Don Fado was one of these humans whom I watched wash the feet of the homeless, who gave of himself unselfishly to those who sought his counsel, and always welcomed me knowing my story. Don, you will be missed. Thank you for listening all those years ago and telling me it is okay to be who I am. To his family, loved ones, and friends, my deepest condolences.

I first met Don and Jean Fado when I attended Westley UMC in Fresno in 1983-1986. Singing next to Jean in the choir made me a better singer. I think that listening to Don made me a better person.

His first-person sermons reminded me of Bob Moon who was the pastor at St Mark´s when I joined the church in 1969.

When my dad (Jim Goff) died, Don came to our house and listened to all the family stories that my mother Jean and my Aunt Darlene told about Dad´s life. In his memorial service, Don faithfully related the story of my dad´s WWII experience of being shot down and ditching his P-38 Lightening in the Mediterranean then being rescued and turned over to the Italians as a POW. He ended up as a POW in Stalag Luft III in Germany and was liberated by Gen Patton´s tank corps almost 2 years to the day from when he was shot down.

Don´s eulogy was so personal, so meaningful and was really appreciated by my family. He was a great man.

I first met Don when he came to St. Marks. I learned a lot from his sermons. They were current and very informative. I have always said that he could make a sermon out of a two-year old´s birthday. What a talent. I was delighted to join several of the trips that he and Jean lead.
After he retired, he would send me an email when he was guest preaching. He called me his "groupie." If at all possible, I would travel to hear him preach.
I am missing him so much. He was an incredible, loving person.

Don marrying Jean and Ellen was a remarkable feat - which took no small amount of courage. That he was able to gather that many fellow ministers to join him is a testament to Don pull-power and to all these wonderful, courageous ministers as well.
One fond memory I have is when Don was chatting with the kids on the steps. One little boy gave a response to Don that tickled him so much that threw himself back and sprawled on the carpet laughing - right in the middle of church! He wasn't worried about conventions or appearances - he was all about connection, authenticity, humour and a heart full of love! Don was one of my favorite people and I miss him dearly.

Dearest Fado family, we lived across the street from you on Hillside Drive so many years ago, and my sister and II babysat for you (and later for the Damontes) during that time. I live in Davis and read about Don's passing in the Sacramento Bee. I'm so sorry for the loss of your husband and father. His light was so needed in these very dark times. I loved reading about all the ways his passion, dedication and grace marked his life's work. Truly God's work. Wishing you all peace and comfort.
