Edward Bartlett Obituary

Edward J. Bartlett, 83, of Savannah, died March 29, 2005, at his residence under the care of Hospice Savannah, Inc. Edward J. Bartlett was once quoted as saying, "Education is a life process. If one stops getting education, the world will pass him by." It is not surprising he has a school that bears his name- Edward Bartlett Middle School. Considering his lifelong commitment to education, Mr. Bartlett has evidently lived by this credo in his work life as well as his personal life. Born in Los Angeles, California on September 22, 1921 Mr. Bartlett attended Los Angeles public schools, where he would one day also teach. He attended the University of Southern California, where he received his B.S. and Master's Degree in Education and Business Administration. In September 1941, he entered the Navy as an aviation cadet, receiving his Navy wings in June 1942. He served as a Navy pilot in the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Pacific theaters. In 1951 Ed and Ev Bartlett mo ved to Savannah where he became the Training Director for Union Bag. Later, he was promoted to Manager of Industrial & Public Relations and held this position until his retirement from Union Camp in 1987. His contributions to his company and the industry were many. He was considered an exceptional recruiter, trainer and advisor. Ed was an extraordinary labor relations administrator. Throughout his career and during his retirement he continued to serve his community. Most notably he served as President of the Savannah -Chatham Board of Education for two terms, from 1959 until 1961. He was instrumental in seeing a $6 million school bond referendum passed in 1960 and his administration was credited with progress unequaled in the history of the local school system. In 1961, Edward J. Bartlett Junior High School was officially dedicated in his honor. The new school was a controlled environment structure and the first of its kind ever planned in the State of Georgia. In 1965, he was appoint ed General Chairman of United Community Services. While he served as General Chairman, UCS surpassed its fund raising goals every year. He served his last term as General Chairman in 1974. Most notably, he brought Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire to Savannah. He saw a need in the community for services to people with disabilities and laid the groundwork to invite Goodwill Industries to open a branch in Savannah. Since its inception in 1965, Mr. Bartlett assisted the corporation in its growth and led the organization through its move to its current location on Sallie Mood Dr. Edward J. Bartlett is well known for his philanthropy and willingness to chair boards of local non-profit organizations, civic clubs and other agencies, including Vice President of Chatham Savannah Association (1953-1958), Telfair Academy of Arts Board Member (1956); the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce Award of Appreciation (1958); Candler Hospital Board Member (1973-1995); Chairman, Georgia Subsequent Injury Trust Fund (1977-2001); Boy Scouts of America Board Member (1985); Chairman of Candler Hospital Board (1992-1996); and Trustee for Georgia Hospital Association (1996); He has received the Herschel V. I will always have fond and special memories of Ed and the great times we shared together rebuilding Candler Hospital and Candler Health System. Ed truly loved Candler and he had a very prominent impact on Candler's great success over the years. Ed was always very supportive of me and the decisions we had to make, especially during some very difficult times. Ed and I were alot alike in that we both always wanted to get everything done yesterday. He was a great asset to Candler and the Savannah Communtiy and we all lost a great friend when the Lord called Ed Home; however, his legacy will live on in our hearts and memories.

Ev, Susan, Karen and Faye,

I always enjoyed the sparkle in Ed's eyes. He was such a blessing to know. His sense of humor very often left me going out better than I came in. May God bless you all and hold you in His care as you go through the days to come. Please let me know if I can do anything at all for you.

Ev and Family, it's been a long while since we've seen you all last but that doesn't mean you have left our thoughts. My memories go way back in time when mom(Eveylene)work with Ed. I have very fond memories of those days. My fondest is my life size doll house that Ed and my dad built for me as a little girl. It was with me for many years. Mrs. Bartlett and family,

Sincerest love and sympathy is sent to you today. I will always appreciate the leadership and vision

Mr. Bartlett gave to healthcare in the Savannah area. He took a sincere interest in the availability of quality healthcare services in rural Georgia. Through his leadership Effingham County was afforded many opportunities for access to specialty physicians at the Effingham County Hospital, he offered the benefit of purchasing to our facility, continuing education for staff, assistance to become a designated rural magnet hospital for education to universities and medical schools, assistance to become the first rural chest pain center, assistance with logo development and design and other administrative offerings.

He offered the Candler Hospital experience of being a historical significant traditional provider of healthcare to our area. I do thank him for the good memories of a Golden Era in healthcare.

Dear Bartlett Family,

I was so saddened to find out that Mr. Bartlett had passed away. I remember that he continued to visit and give gifts to our school even after he was confined to his wheelchair. He was a wonderful, kind, gentleman who gave much to the school that was named for him. I hope Bartlett Middle School will live up to his high standards and great name for many years to come. He will be sadly missed by OUR Bartlett family. Love to you all, Diane King

Mr. Bartlett was a wonderful man. I remember when I was a student at BMS I wrote a letter to Mr. Bartlett because I wanted to know more about the man that my middle school was named after. Mr. Bartlett came to my class and shared his life story with us and I couldn't beleive he would take his time to answer a kid's letter, much less come out and talk to us. He also arranged a feild trip to Goodwill Industries. That was back in 96. Over the years I have thought of Mr. Bartlett often. I wrote him a letter when I graduated High School to let him know what an inspiration he was too me and he answered me back. He was always a role model for me and will continue to be.

To Ev and the Family of Ed Bartlett,

I wish to express my sincere sadness

at the loss of Mr. Bartlett. My prayers are with each one of you.

I remember that Mr. Bartlett was such a hard worker for all members of the community that he lived in.

I especially appreciate all he did

to support my husband while he served as President and CEO of Candler Hospital and Mr.Bartlett was Chairman of the Hospital Board.

I remember how proud he was of his family. He was always telling about

what each one was doing. I always enjoy the family picture that we received at Christmas. I keep the picture by my desk and enjoy it all year.

I always envied The Bartlett Family

that they spent Christmas together by all staying together at Ev and Ed's home. That always made me think ....that is what Christmas is all about.......FAMILY together.

Savannah has truly lost a "Powerful

Supporter" of it's people and community.

Mr. Bartlett was very active with my group of SEARCH students while I taught at Bartlett MIddle School. His grandson, Will, was one of my gifted students and I guess that was how we met. Mr. Bartlett arranged for us to work on a Goodwill ad campaign for the opening of their new site on Sallie Mood Drive. Our SEARCH classes designed the advertising for the grand opening and Will even did a TV spot advertising the opening. I will always remember his energy and enthusiasm and commitment. He was truly a gift to our program and HIS school.
