Marguerite Balcavage Obituary

July 14, 2008

Mrs. Marguerite M. Balcavage, 84, of Pottsville, formerly of Minersville, passed away Monday at Schuylkill Center. Born in Cannes, France, on April 6, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Antoine and Anne Chotti Peyzaret. Her husband, Paul, passed away in 1978. She was a member of Emanuel United Church of Christ, Minersville, and the Retired Nurses Association. She was employed at Allied Chemical as a quality control supervisor before retiring. She attended the University of Algiers, majoring in chemistry, and also two years of medi- cal school in France. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Danielle Jacqueline Derfler, and a brother, Jean Peyzaret. Surviving are two daughters, Monique Derfler, wife of John Derfler, Lebanon, and Jacqueline Greis, wife of Paul Greis, Key West, Fla.; a son, Paul Balcavage, husband of Terry Balcavage, Easton; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Smith, Ryan Derfler, Daren Derfler, Willie Madrigal, Maggie Madrigal, Joesph Thompson, Krista Flowers and her angel, Danielle. She also had seven great-grandchildren. Marguerite loved and was very proud of her family and friends. She is best remembered for her French cooking, intimate conversations and time she spent playing cards with her family and friends. She enjoyed reading, watching movies and sending e-mails to her family and friends around the world. She considered herself blessed to maintain a strong relationship with her French family and visited them many times throughout her life, most recently in September 2007 with her children and their spouses. Although Marguerite was from France, she considered herself an American and became a U.S. citizen in 1956. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Mahal-Ritzel Funeral Home Inc., Minersville, with the Rev. Rick Kantner officiating. Friends may call Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 7 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Mount Peace Cemetery, Branch Township. Sign the guest book at republicanherald.com

Jacquie, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your precious mom. I don't know if you remember me. I am Michelle McGee now Perry. I was closer in age to Monique (please give her my email address). My mom is Sue. We moved to Roswell from Albuquerque. Your mom and you all came to visit us there. I loved your mom and have wondered all of these years where you all were. I remember you mother reading my tea leaves but most of all I remember how nice she was to everyone and how she loved her family. Please tell Monique and Paul too, how sorry I am for their loss. Maggie was a wonderful person. I am so sorry so many years have past not connecting to you and your family. I have searched the internet several times over the years and never found you. I am so sorry I had to find your family again through your mom's passing. I can still see her smiling face and hear her words of wisdom. She was so much funn too! You are in my thoughts and prayers. Be blessed. Michelle, my cell . . . . .

Maggie, When I close my eyes and think of you this is what I want to remember. Your smilling face and above your laughter saying in that distinct accent that was yours alone "Behave Joodeee". I never laughed as much as I did on our trip to Wildwood. You,Gerry and me.God what fun we had that week. We really kept those fireman jumping. This is the way I choose to remember you Mag untill we meet again. Living,Loving,Laughing. You and Gerry stay out of trouble up there till I get there. I know Danielle will be making sure you behave. See Ya Frenchie. Your friend Pet

Derfie and Family,
When I think of Meme, I smile through tears of thankfulness as fond memories of her fierce devotion to family, quick wit, intelligence, and laughter are recalled. Words cannot assuage the grief of a heavy heart. Through the comfort of family and friends, my hope is the heaviness is easier to bear. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Remember, whatever you need ... whenever you need it. Love ya, Mon Aimee!

I remember the first time I met your mom and how much she touched my heart with her love for her family. It is difficult when our parents pass because it brings to light the realization that for each of us God has a plan and that his plan for us on earth becomes shorter with each passing day. He leaves behind all of those precious memories of those loved ones that have gone before us so that we don't ever forget the joy that they created in our lives. My prayers and thoughts are with you as you say goodbye to your mom.

Paul, Monique and Jacqui,
I am so glad I got to see you Mom a few weeks ago. We talked for hours....we reminised about everything from the past and caught up on everything we missed. She told me all about the three of you and your families and about how she loved each and everyone of you differently - but the same. She was looking forward to getting out on July 1st and going to visit Jacqui. I thought she looked beautiful, and so young, she was very happy that day, and so proud of all of you. I know she was glad to see me and my Mom and I am so thankful to God that I did get to spend that time with her. She is a very special person and I will always remember how close I was with her years ago. I will pray for you all. Take comfort in the fact that she is with Danielle. I'm sure they are both very happy now. Love, Mary Lou & Betty

She spoke lovingly of all her family, she was so proud of you and she adored you. She shared many memories of her childhood and family stories. She loved her grand doggies too. You were more than children to her, you were her best friends as well.
I always left your Mom's home with a smile on my face & my heart. She was a wonderful, caring, generous woman who will be sadly missed.

Monique,Jacquie,Paul, Ryan, Darin,Maggie, and Willie,
and all of Maggie's family,
Maggie was an extended family member of mine, through the years, she has gotten to know my mom, husband, children, aunts, and even friends of mine. She has met my brother, and knows my family skeletons in and outside the closet. When my mother died last year-Maggie took her place in some respects. I could talk to Maggie and tell her anything at all. She loved me unconditionally-like she loved you all. She was such a great lady...like my mom. Things were black or white-never gray. She thought so much of my husband and kids-made cookies for them and just was so great and I can't even begin to tell you how I am going to miss her. Sometimes I just have to wonder why life is the way it is...but then I have to realize how blessed I was to have had Maggie come into my life like she did, and to have had her become my friend and to have her so close for so many years. Life is good and so was the time we shared. I will miss and love her forever. I still would like to know what I said to her in French in her dream that Thursday before she passed. She told me that day she was going to die and that she was ready. She knew and was at peace. Know this and find comfort in the fact that she was ready-even though we were and are not ready to let her go. We will keep her memories alive because a great lady like that can NEVER be forgotten.
