Dave Fontana Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 18, 2001.
Man Among Men, and Boys
The memorial for Dave Fontana is scheduled for Oct. 17, which would have been his 38th birthday. He died at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, on his eighth wedding anniversary.

Mr. Fontana was a firefighter with the elite Squad 1 unit, stationed in Park Slope, Brooklyn, where he lived with his wife, Marian, and 5-year-old son, Aidan. Neighbors were shocked by the news that 12 men from the small firehouse on Union Street had died, but they took his loss especially hard.

Dave Fontana was a man's man. He volunteered his time for the Boy Scouts. He read to children. He worked tirelessly to find the names of firefighters who had fallen in World War II so that dedication plaques could be hung in the firehouses where they had served.

A trained sculptor, Mr. Fontana was known for the elaborate Halloween costumes he and his son wore in the annual neighborhood parade. "You know Dave Fontana?" Aidan asked the other day. "I love Dave Fontana."

Dave,

I am again thinking of you and the other people who died on 9/11/01 - all of them strangers to me - but mostly I think of you and of Marian and Aidan. I know it is also your wedding anniversary, and my heart breaks for your family. Rest in Peace, Dave.

6-8-16 Just the other day my wife and I saw a memorial flag with the names of the victims of 9/11. This was in a office at our Beaver County Court House, in Beaver, PA. I had to fight back the tears when I read David's name. I wish that I had known this Brave, Kind young man. But now that I see his picture and read the story of him and his family and friends. I will never forget. And I will try to have the courage and kindness that David brought to this world. Sincerely Richard T. Fontana.

My name is Jack lopez. I participated today in a ceremony at Red Rocks Park in Denver. We walked besides firefighters from all over Colorado and elsewhere the amount of stairs equal to the number of flights at the World Trade Center. The theme is "we climb because they climbed". It is a moving tribute for all. I was given a badge to wear with David`s photo. After reading his profile, I am very proud and honored to carry his memory with me this day. I salute him and all those in his profession.

We have never met before. I have been a lifeguard at Jones Beach for 11 years, and work at field 6 for the six of them.
Inside of our shack there is a picture and plaque of you hanging above the door.

Even though I only know you through pictures and stories other lifeguards share, I feel spiritually connected to you some how. Perhaps it was our shared love of jones beach. Maybe we're just kindred souls.

My girlfriend's father also died in 9/11, and every year I visit the memorial, I've looked for your name and placed a flower in your letters.

Today I visited the 9/11 museum, a powerful and worthy tribute to people like you. I looked for your name and picture on the wall, and couldn't find it. When I lowered my head, there you were, Dave Fontana, staring right back at me the whole time.

I'm not sure why I needed to write this, but I did. I want you and your family to know that there is some jones beach lifeguard out there who will always think about you.

Hello, my name is Maya and a select group of students are going to New York to visit the memorial sites. Each person going was given one or two firefighters to research and create a memerorial for, and one of my firefighters is Dave. From what I read just on this webpage, I can tell that Dave was an astounding man and a kind soul. It's a tragedy that he was lost that day. I read a very small portion of a Widow's Walk before my teacher had to give it to someone else, and I would very much like to get it and read it. If you'd like to contact me to help me with descriptions or pictures of Dave, you can email my teacher, Mr. Chrvala. Whatever you can do, that'd be great!

My name is Nicholas green and I recently ran a race/obstacle called "hero rush" here in Maryland. There was a wave in the race to Recognize fallen firefighters from 9/11 being a baltimore city firefighter I thought it would be a experience to run in the race. Each runner in the 9/11 wave was given a number to wear with a name of a fallen member on it, I happen to have David's. I ran the race hard and fast thinking of the name on my chest. After I wanted to know who he was so I researched and landed here. I ment something to me having ran with his name I just wanted to let someone out side my family and friends know that this had happened and that he is a all around hero.

I like the fact that people (like myself) who don't even know Dave Fontana are able to pay tribute to him. I was only four when September Eleventh, 2001 occurred, so I don't have much of a memory of it. I have to do a project on Dave Fontana, but i am glad i can research him. He is a good example of a model citizen. To all of his loved ones, I keep you in my prayers. The lost of a loved one is always hard. I attended Daves Memorial Service on October 17th. I never knew him before then. But since that time there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of him. I have been a fire fighter now for over 35 years and my living room is full of fire fighting stuff. But there's also a special section that I have created for Dave. The best thing is a bronze axe that was made by Liberty Art Works for me. It is a commerative 9/11 FDNY axe and I had a special plaque put on it that says "In Memory of Dave Fontana - FDNY / Squad 1". I am glad I found this site so I know there are others who remember Dave. I also read Marians book.

It is hard for me to imagine that I could possibly do all that you have done since 9/11. Dear FF Fontana,

I just read the very moving diary in Vanity Fair of your wife's heart wrenching experience on that fatal day in September. I cried after the very first paragraph. I too am a Fireman's wife. My husband is Jim Molinell of 246/169 in Brighton Beach but fortunately for us he was one of the lucky ones. I know this goes without saying but your wife and child loves you very much and you are missed dearly. You are a very brave man and your family is extremely proud of you (as well as all who have never met you). May you rest in peace. P.S. I came across this memorial site today and saw this memorial to Dave Fontana. We were in Ireland at the Kileen House when you came in from a long journey. We all toasted your wonderful husband, father and friend in the little tiny bar. I have thought of all of you since that time and hope you have found peace in your lives and have been able to carry on. I said a prayer that next day at the seaside where you were going to scatter the ashes. I think of all of you often and hope you are well. Meeting you in Ireland was a blessing. Dave,

It's been a very long time since we talked together at Mom's birthday party. Who could have imagined the world would be so different four days later. You are missed. Not a moment has passed since the 11th without your being present in my thoughts. The world is a much harder place without you.

I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to offer some kind thoughts to Marian, Aidan and our family. Dave was a remarkable human being. I’d like to share a little of who he was.

Dave was at his finest when he had his son Aidan in his arms. Nothing in Dave’s life had brought him as much happiness as Aidan. Being a father defined Dave in everything else he did.

Dave loved his wife Marian with every bit of his soul. Through Marian Dave became whole. Marian showed Dave a unique way to view the world and to live his life. Dave reveled in Marian’s humor, charm, beauty and strength.

Dave was devoted and committed to our mother Toni and all the rest of our family. He reached out to family near and far. He truly enjoyed the presence of family, whether they were known for years or in meeting for the first time.

Dave was an artist. Not just the creator of fine art, though he created many pieces of impressive work. Dave’s art manifested itself in everything he did. In the costumes he made for Aidan. In the small objects he created for fun. In the jokes and pranks he loved to present to us.

Dave was a true fireman. He loved every aspect of his profession. From the engine or truck he rode in to the satisfaction of the important work he did as part of his regular routine.

This is a small glimpse of my brother Dave.

I miss you Dave, especially on the holidays. You always made them more than they might have otherwise been.

Love you and miss you, your brother Ed.

Dear Marian and Aidan,

As Sept.11, 2001 events unfolded, I could not help but feel sorrow and pain for those who were directly affected. I was 5 1/2 months pregnant with our daughter, and, later that week, I received a prayer card from a friend at work with the name of a firefighter who was listed as missing on Sept. 11. The card I received was for David. There is not a day that goes by that I do not think of the brave man who died doing what he loved. My daughter came early on 11/9/01, and I was home on maternity leave when news came that Dave's remains had been found. I was finally able to see a face of the very people whom I have prayed for for so long. Marian, you are a hero to me and the picture of strength. I keep you and Aidan in my thoughts always. I still have the prayer card. May God bless your family always, and remain strong.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. May God shine His light on you and comfort all those who mourn you.

Dear Marian,

I first met you and Dave at the engagement party for Mila and Joey in New York. Dave and I spent the evening talking about our mutual love of Disney World. His face lit up when he spoke of the trip you took as a family. The next time we were together was in Wisconsin for the wedding. You played for the ceremony and Aidan was the ring bearer. I will never forget the look on Dave's face as he got Aidan ready to walk down the aisle. It was very apparent what a loving father he was. I know from stories that Mila has shared with me what a wonderful husband, father and dear friend Dave was. May his memory be a blessing forever.
