Sisterhood Forged

Her years at Villanova University gave Jennifer Kane, 26, both her career ‹ she was an accountant at Marsh & McLennan ‹ and her best friend, Constanca Fonseca Vescio, who grew up in Portugal.

"We were like sisters, always. I swore in our sophomore year that she would be my maid of honor someday," Ms. Vescio said. She kept that promise last year when she got married in Sintra, near Lisbon.

"She had memorized a sentence in Portuguese, but she was too shy to make her speech," Ms. Vescio said. "She wanted to tell me personally." But in the festive uproar, she never did.

Ms. Kane's photograph has been used in many media accounts of Sept. 11, which gives some tiny comfort to her parents, Faye and George Kane of Plymouth, Mass., and her brothers, Matthew and Timothy Kane. But she was more than the beautiful face the photos show, said her mother. She was full of humor and warmly affectionate, with "strong family values."

Ms. Vescio said. "She was my heart."
