Before moving to the small Minnesota town of Truman, a young Roger W. Deeds lived with his family at a number of military bases, often on high alert and prepared for threats. "When we moved here, he was in third grade," Joyce Deeds said. "'Mom,' he said, 'There is no fence around the parameter. Anyone could bomb Truman,'" said Joyce Deeds. "He was special. He always wanted to protect us." Deeds, 24, of Biloxi, Miss., was killed Nov. 16 while fighting insurgents in Obeidi. He was a 2000 high school graduate and was assigned to Camp Pendleton. He died the day before the second anniversary of his joining the Marines. "He's been my best friend for five years. My everything," said his wife, Sarah. Though they'd planned to marry in the summer of 2004, they hurried the wedding because Roger was being sent to Iraq. They were married in February of that year by a justice of the peace in Pensacola, Fla. He also is survived by a 16-month-old son, Alaric, and a newborn daughter, Mikaleigh, who he had never met. "He never got to see her, and he was such a good daddy," said his mother.
