Petty Officer 3rd Class John Thomas Fralish II, with long service in the War on Terrorism, was killed in action in northeast Afghanistan on Monday, Feb. 6, 2006.
He was the son of James Lewis and Jean Louise Rynard Fralish of New Kingstown. He was born in Lynchburg, Va., on Sept. 27, 1975.
He served in the campaign to liberate Iraq, and had an additional tour of duty there from the base in Kuwait. He arrived in Afghanistan and was attached to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Division. His comrades from his unit, "Devil Dogs," said he was known by his nickname "Captain America."
He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, The National Defense Service Medal, The Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal for service, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Marine Corps Device and the Combat Action Ribbon. He qualified as a SEAL at Camp Pendleton, Calif., in June 2005.
