When Stephen P. Downing II came home from war, he and his older sister had plans: They were going to get matching tattoos. "My brother was the main thing in my life. My heart and soul is my brother," said Danica Downing. "He had a twinkle in his eyes." Downing, 30, of Burkesville, Ky., died Oct. 28 while on guard duty near Fallujah. He was based in South Korea. Before joining the Indiana National Guard in 1994, Downing was an avid snow skier and raced off-road trucks professionally. He and his ex-wife, LeAnn Emmons, met when in high school. "We've never not been friends," said Emmons, who graduated in 1994. Downing did not finish. Emmons remembers Downing as a funny man with no enemies. "He has always been there," she said. "He was a clown and made everything more fun. He made family, not just friends." Downing also is survived by a daughter, Taylor, 9, and a son, Stephen, 5. "Although my heart is heavy for you, son, I have a great pride deep in my soul," his father, Stephen Downing Sr., wrote in a letter. "I am the proudest father in the world."
