Jon E. Bonnell Jr.'s father shared his son's sense of humor, honed by their favorite movie, "Tommy Boy."
"We would watch that movie over and over," Bonnell Sr. said. "Chris Farley was his favorite comedian. He had a tear running down when Farley died. I remember that. He couldn't believe it."
Bonnell, 22, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, was killed Aug. 7 when he stepped on a land mine in Anbar province. He was a 2003 high school graduate and was assigned to Camp Pendleton.
Bonnell was an honorable mention all-conference baseball player his senior year in high school. He was fiercely competitive, yet loyal, friends said.
"He was a great person. He always put other people first," classmate and teammate Brian Courtney said.
He wanted to see the world and took the most pride in his effort to assist victims of the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia after his first tour. Back in Iraq, he picked up where he left off, on bomb detection duty.
"I know you don't like me being here, but I love this job," he wrote home.
He also is survived by his mother, Denise Rork.
