Unit's Base: Camp Lejeune, N.C.

As an example of Jon T. Hicks Jr.'s "strong sense of right and wrong," Randy Snyder, Hicks' Scoutmaster, told a story about the day his wife had been caught in the seemingly endless traffic at the end of the school day. The only driver to stop and finally let her leave? Jon Hicks. Hicks didn't know Snyder's wife. "He did the right thing, not because it was someone he knew, but because it was the right thing," Snyder said. Hicks, 20, of Atco, N.J., was killed Sept. 10 during combat operations in Anbar province. He was assigned to Camp Lejeune and was a 2005 high school graduate. Jon Hicks Sr. said his son enjoyed football and followed the Philadelphia Eagles. He "liked playing video games and loved playing paint ball," he said. One of his grandmothers, Virginia M. Hicks, said he had seen the Marines as a pathway to law enforcement. "He wanted to be a policeman badly, and he believed if you've been in the Marines, you'd be the first chosen to be on the force," she said. "That's why he went into the Marines." He also is survived by his mother, Cathy.
