Daren A. Smith liked old tunes by U2 and Rammstein, but was into the newest alternative music CD or gaming video, as well the latest movie. "He would say his dream was to be a film producer, anywhere, behind the camera and creating anything that wasn''t a cookie-cutter plot," his obituary read. Smith, 19, of Helena, Mont., died Dec. 13 in Baghdad of wounds sustained from a non-combat related incident. He was assigned to Fort Polk. He grew up in Butte but moved with his family to Helena in 2000, where he attended Helena Middle School and Helena High, graduating in 2006. He completed a semester at the University of Montana-Helena College of Technology. He enjoyed the traveling, and one of his dreams was to visit Ireland, which was briefly fulfilled while deploying with his unit. He loved the Buffalo Bills, bowling and wrestling with his friends. There were more than a few bruises and a story how it got started. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Debbra Smith and Wes McLeod, and his father, Bruce Abraham. "We will all miss seeing your face light up, Opie," his obituary read.
