Jesse J.J. Castro always had a strong connection to the Christmas holiday. He was even cast as baby Jesus in his church nativity play, but didn't make it because he was born days later than expected.
This Christmas, his newborn son played the role his father didn't get to _ starring as the baby Jesus in the Our Lady of Peace and Safe Journey Catholic Church's nativity play.
"It's very special for us because our Jesse is in heaven celebrating with Jesus," said the soldier's mother, Doring Jesus.
Castro, 22, of Chalan Pago, Guam, was killed by a roadside bomb Dec. 6 in Hawijah. He was a 2003 high school graduate and was assigned to Schofield Barracks.
Fight promoter Roman Dela Cruz, who started to train Castro when Castro was 15, described him as strong, athletic and respectful.
"He was really happy to defend his country. A lot of the core group of the guys always thought that Jess had potential in mixed martial arts," Dela Cruz said. "It's really unfortunate that this had to happen to him."
He is survived by his wife, Theresa, and son, Jesse Jr.
