During his first deployment in Iraq, Ronnie D. Williams made a nerve-racking phone call to Bill O''Banion. Williams wanted to permission to marry O''Banion''s daughter, the girl he used to fish and play with as a youngster. Permission was given _ gladly. Williams, 26, Erlanger, Ky., died July 17, a day after his tank went into a canal in Baghdad. A 1998 high school graduate, he was assigned to Fort Carson. Williams recently married Darlene Williams, his childhood sweetheart and was about to adopt Darlene''s 2-year-old son, Houston. "He was larger than life, and he loved kids _ everybody''s kids," said his uncle, Lance Anderson. Darlene said her husband called almost every other day. "The last thing he said was that he would call in a few days, and if he didn''t, it was because something had happened to one of the guys. He never thought anything would happen to him." At William''s funeral, Daniel Wells, an 18-year-old related to Williams by marriage, warmly told O''Banion that Williams had taken him on his first hunting trip. "Now you need to pass that on down to the boy, little Houston," O''Banion replied. "He won''t have someone to show him how to hunt."
