Karl R. Linn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Karl R. Linn was a tinkerer with a flair for the creative. Even while at war, friends could keep up with him through a Web site he'd rigged from Iraq. The site shows photos of guns and helicopters. One is labeled, "Little old me with the Kalashnikov," and others offer a view of the Euphrates from his balcony. "Welcome to my improvised website about my current adventures in Iraq," it says. "For those of you who don't know me (or for those who simply don't remember), my name's Karl, and the Marine Corps Reserve has called me into active service for the time being." Linn, 20, of Chesterfield, Va., died Jan. 26 during an attack on his convoy near Haditha. He was based at Lynchburg. Linn, who helped start a robotics team at high school, was a mechanical engineering student at Virginia Commonwealth University. He was so small in stature when he first went into basic training _ 5-foot-6 and 125 pounds _ that he was put on double rations. "God, everybody that knew him loved him," said his father, Richard. "He was a little guy _ but he was a little gem." He also is survived by his mother, Malisa.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Linn Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Karl R. Linn US Marine Lance Corporal. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

I never met Karl, but I keep this page pinned to my iPad, and pop in from time to time to see his sweet face, and to remember meeting his Dad at the Marine Parents conference. I don't know if I ever told my son about that meeting. He was just learning to fly his chopper back then. Now he's a career Marine, with 4 deployments, 3 kids, and a wife with the strength of Krak de Chevaliers. He has his own list of departed friends to be remembering and praying for this Memorial Day, and every day. I believe their squad (may it remain small) will muster together again one day, not far from where you all will be embracing Karl. God bless Karl's strong and faithful friends and family, now and always.

Karl, John and I went to the Memorial Day Ceremony at Santa Ana Cemetery. As always we took your American Heroes Banner with us. There was special recognition for the 150th year since the end of the Civil War. A handful of people came up to talk to us after the Ceremony. We take every opportunity we get to tell people about what an incredible young man you were. This is our 10th year at this event. Each year there seem to be more people in attendance which is outstanding. Lots of families with young children. Always some quite elderly folks. I'm always impressed by their commitment to attend despite obvious physical impairments. Role models for all of us, as you were, too. My father passed away a few months ago. He had been unconscious for almost seven days. A few minutes before he left this world he smiled, a huge smile, two times. We felt certain that something; God, family, something extraordinary, was awaiting him. It gave me great comfort and hope that beyond this physical life on earth is something remarkable. I imagined your Grandfather and Uncle Tom and Grandpa Ott and Grandma Stell and You and cousin Andy were waiting for him, in Joyful song. I envisioned the Linn choir/glee club greeting him in song and with love and an everlasting life; one without fear, pain or suffering. That sure helps temper the sadness I feel when I think about what might have been for you and your Mom and Dad and Tan, your future wife and babies and the contribution you would have made in the world. With a heart full of love we send blessings to you in your heavenly home.

10 years, pal, 10 years. On Monday at Culpeper we had a bugler and a gun salute. Dreany and Sprano magically showed up just minutes before. Mom was so pleased that people remember.

Karl, I just read the post from the father in Canada. I share his sentiments. I forgot to post on Memorial Day. John's father was in the hospital. We did go to our traditional Memorial Day event. We took your banner. We had several opportunities to share what an incredible young man you were. You are truly missed, now more than before. Love you and your family.

Karl's dad was the first person we met at our first Marine Parents conference in Houston. Our son was still in training, and since we live in Canada, we didn't have any contact with other military parents (besides my sister, in Houston, whose son was at Annapolis). And so there was this man, wearing a desert hat, standing by a laptop, so proud as he narrated the slideshow of his son's experiences at Haditha Dam. Naturally we asked where his son was now, and without skipping a beat we were told that he had been killed. The words felt like a body-blow, for we were not ready for such a speedy encounter with the military parent's darkest reality. For me Mr. Linn became the definition of courage, and I've never forgotten him or that meeting. Tonight, as I read that ISIS threatens to blow up the Haditha Dam in order to bring more of Iraq to its knees, Karl and his father were first in my thoughts -- it's hard to imagine any news more certain to re-open the wounds. Karl and all his family are in my prayers once again.

Karl, We went to our local Memorial Day ceremony at Santa Ana cemetery. This year they paid special tribute to the men and women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. We cried for our loss, of you. We cried for your Mom and Dad and brother and for everyone who liked, loved and miss you. It seemed there was a larger than usual crowd this year. That is good. Thank you, dear cousin. Seems like yesterday you and your Dad picked us up at the airport for your Grandpa's funeral. And now you rest beside him. With boundless love, Lorrie and John

Karl R. Linn was a patriot; he lived what he professed, and was willing to risk his life for what he knew was important. Seeing his picture and learning about him and his family, puts a face to the treasure that America has given to an often ungrateful world.

But without Lance Corporal Karl R. Linn, and others like him, the USA would not know freedom. And if our dynamic, free and muscular republic had never been born, the world today would mostly consist of darkness.

For these things we thank you Karl.

Gratefully,

January 27, 2009

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Karl, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

My Dearest Soldier-
As i sat down to dinner today and thought about what i was most thankful for.... i had to do some thinking.... first i thought about that empty chair situated between me and my grandmother and the thought of you being there with me and i said a small thank you prayer. you helped me through alot of rough spots when no one else would. you were my strength when i didnt even want to get out of bed... that hasnt changed. i still remember your monkey dates... the 4 chicken sandwiches you ate everytime we went to towne center...the pounds of gummy bears you had the special way of eating them... the karate fights they would be in... the way i rubbed your hair in class....the 2 am phone calls that i always got grounded for...I will always love you... my heart will never change.

August 17, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Dear Karl
I have had the priviledge of knowing a bit about you through a friendship I have made with your family here in Midlothian. You are one of many heroes for our Country. Your brave soul took you to a place far from home to defend freedom. I have had the priviledge of knowing your mother, father, brother and grandmother. They are all fine people and are very proud of you. They miss you and always will. I will always honor your memory!
