Edward Fernandes Obituary

East Bridgewater Edward Fernandes, 80, of East Bridgewater, formerly of Braintree, died peacefully on July 19, 2008, surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Elvera "Vera" A. (Gaita) Fernandes, whom he married on July 1, 1951. Born in Cambridge, October 4, 1927, Edward was a loving son of the late Antonio and Hilda (Silva) Fernandes. After graduating from Rindge Technical High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army to fight in World War II. After the war, he met his wife Vera at a dance hall in Revere. The two married and enjoyed a happy and blessed marriage for 57 years. Edward graduated from Northeastern University with a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering. He worked for the Commonwealth of Mass. Department of Public Works for forty years. He was a Supervising Design Civil Engineer for the Highway Department and was in charge of project design for the state. Mr. Fernandes was primarily responsible for designing highways, bridges, rest areas and recreational trails throughout the state. One of his proudest designs was the "sidewalk handicap accessible ramp." Upon his retirement in 1990, he continued to enjoy time with his coworkers by organizing monthly luncheons for retired state employees. Edward loved spending time with his four daughters and volunteered as a "Mr. Fix-it" at all of their homes. He also loved seeing his grandchildren, golfing with his friends and most especially taking day trips to Plymouth and Cape Cod with his wife. In addition to his wife Vera, Edward was the loving father of Linda A. and her husband Robert J. Gay of Attleboro, Paula A. Murphy of Bridgewater, Sandra A. Lyons of Easton and Carla A. and her husband Robert C. Ceurvels of Dighton. He was also the proud grandfather of Kristin and Kevin Gay, David Murphy, Eric and Jessica Lyons and Nicole, Bobby and Christopher Ceurvels. He was the brother of the late Anthony and Harold Fernandes. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral, Wednesday, July 23, at The Prophett Funeral Home, 98 Bedford St., Bridgewater, at 9 a.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated by family friend, the Rev. Richard Chretien, at St. John the Evangelist Church, East Bridgewater, at 10 a.m. Visiting hours will be Tuesday, July 22, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Prophett Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will be at the V.A. National Cemetery, Bourne, at 12:30 p.m. Prophett Funeral Home 508-697-4332

Eddie was a great boss to me while in worked in Plans And Records in Boston. I will miss him deeply. His favorite sentence was "Where's my girlfriend?" everytime he passed by the Plans And Records room.
I thought he was a great person to talk to and a great worker. I hope he is with the Great Voila somewhere in Heaven.
