Alphonse Young Obituary

Alphonse E. Young BROCKTON Alphonse E. Young, 95, lifelong resident of Brockton, died Oct. 16, 2008 after a brief illness. Confident that his Lithuanian genes and a love of life were the reason for his longevity, "Pop", to both family and friends, was most happy offering encouraging advice while always providing a positive role model for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A creative thinker raised during the Depression, he experimented with solar energy to heat water and was always developing ingenious solu- tions to make life better for his family. Before anyone recycled, Pop was building things from material others might have discarded. He instilled a curiosity, work ethic and do it yourself attitude to everyone he touched, while thoroughly enjoying boating, fishing, swimming, gardening and bird watching. As a cook, he had few equals, and was famous for his chicken barbeque technique and secret mustard salad dressing. He had a wonderful sense of humor, delighted everyone with magic tricks, played his harmonica at every request and always had a ready, hearty laugh about life. A man of many talents, he was a carpenter, a salesman, doorman at the Ritz-Carlton, a bartender and a waiter, until his retirement, when he started painting, claiming he produced a masterpiece a minute. He and his late wife Eleanor won an island trip for their unique story on how they met. They were wonderful dancers and enjoyed big band music. He was the beloved father of Alan C. (wife Lois) of Harwich Port, Donald E. (wife Ann) of Oregon, Robert J. (wife Carol) of Plymouth, Richard P. of Florida and Cheryl A. (husband Robert) Carswell of New York City; loving grandfather of Chris, Larry, Neil, Brian, Jessica, Adam, Sarah, Andrew, Megan and Thomas; and great-grandfather of seven. Following cremation, all are welcome to calling hours Wednesday 6-9 p.m. in Waitt Funeral Home, 850 North Main St., Brockton. Prayer service Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Belcher Chapel at Waitt Funeral Home. Burial at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Old Colony Elderly Services, 144 Main St., Brockton, MA 02301. Call 508-583-7272 or visit www.waittfuneralhome.com.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to your family. Mr Young was a wonderful friend to my grandmother, Nellie Czaja. Living in Florida, we appreciate the friendship he, along with his sons, have given her over the years. With sympathy from Dineen Dickens & Sue Welch (granddaughters of Nellie Czaja) as well as from my mother and father, Frank and Elaine (Czaja) Occhipinti.
