All those early- and cold- Boston mornings over coffee and cigarettes (it was a long time ago) in discussion of the finer points of the literature and the not-so-fine issues in training post-docs..it all comes back with Sue's kind note. Those were heady days for me, with great possibilities outlined on a daily basis, and John was always helpful, as were you, Sue.
Thank you, Sue, for including me in this message.

Dr. Horton was a distinguished colleague who I will remember through the referred patients that he treated while at the college. He was an excellent periodontist, with a great chairside manner. A true professional.

I John 4b: ;and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
I remember John, “Doc” we called him, sitting at our kitchen table, as he did so many times, speaking tenderly about his children. He would go through each of them, one by one, lovingly telling us about them. Also, sitting in the kitchen rocker, with tears welding up in his eyes, then running down his checks, telling us of his love and appreciation for his wife Susan.
Doc loved. He loved his wife. His children. His students. His neighbors. His country. He made every relationship personal. He took the responsibility to serve and love his country, personal. For anyone to know him, was to be a personal relationship. Because he loved.
