Mabel Gomes Obituary

Mabel F. Gomes Middleboro Mabel F. (Long) Gomes, age 90 years, of Middleboro, died on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, at the Hannah B. G. Shaw Home for the Aged, Middleboro, surrounded by her family, after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Edmund M. Gomes, who predeceased her on March 6, 1984. Born in Middleboro, daughter of the late Albert and Fannie (Schmerl) Long, she was a 1934 graduate of Middleboro High School. In her early years, she worked at the Middleboro Laundry, and then was a linen distributor at the former St. Luke's Hospital, Middleboro, until her retirement. She was an active member of the Central United Methodist Church, a past president of the United Methodist Women, a superintendent of the Sunday school, and had sung in the choir. She loved music, having played violin, and also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, reading, crossword puzzles, and Scrabble. Survivors include one son, Albert E. Gomes of East Taunton; one daughter, Shirley F. Frye of Middleboro; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren. She was sister of the late Charles Long, Hazel Peck and Daisy Phillips. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 11 a.m., at the Ashley Funeral Home, 35 Oak St., Middleboro. Visiting hours, to which relatives and friends are invited to attend, will be held on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery, Middleboro. In lieu flowers, donations in her memory to the Hannah Shaw Home, Activities Fund, 299 Wareham St., Middleboro, 02346, would be appreciated.
