He saw action during 17 months in World War II in the North African and European theaters and was honorably discharged in April of 1946. To the friends and family of Brother Jim,

Please accept our deepest condolences on Brother Jim's demise.

He was a fine member of the The Holy Cross Clergy, who helped older folks with kindness and sympathy, one who did his honorable time as a US Veteran , and was an astute administrator.

Brother Jim, May you rest in peace.

Mr. Madigan,
Sir, I didn't know you but I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the U.S. Army in Europe as a member of the 66th Infantry "Black Panther" Division of which the 262nd Infantry was a part of. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy. The 66th saw heavy combat from January of 1945 to the end of the War in May 1945 where it was assigned to the Lorient and St. Nazaire Pockets in France which held 60,000 German troops penned in on Port Cities on the French Coast. It was a thankless job that didn't garned the publicity of other actions in Europe yet was still very crucial. In its five months of combat, the 66th suffered over 2,200 men killed and wounded in action which included one of their troopships-the SS Leopoldville being sunk by a U-boat on Christmas Eve 1944. I'm sorry for going on and on but whenever I read about what our men went through during WW II, I am always in awe.
