Grethe Fesler Obituary

Scituate Grethe Jones Fesler, 91, of Scituate, passed away at her home on June 12, 2008. She was born in Fargo, ND, where she was a high-diving champion in high school. After spending her first 2 years of college at North Dakota State University, she went to Northwestern University, where she graduated from the School of Speech. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert H. Fesler. A resident of Cohasset for over 25 years before moving to Scituate, Grethe was a past-president of the Community Garden Club of Cohasset, a hard-working supporter of the Cohasset Community Center, and a long-time member of the Cohasset Golf Club. She was also an active member of the Professional Women's Club of Boston. A talented portrait artist, Grethe enjoyed art, reading, skiing, golf, bowling, gardening, and her family. She was an adventurous traveler, including camping in Alaska's Denali National Park and spending her 85th birthday in her grandfather's native Norway. Polly Logan, a friend and former neighbor, says: "Grethe was a wonderful civic leader, working for many good causes in Cohasset. She had great willingness to give of her time, a quality which she instilled in her children, all of whom are wonderful volunteers. The whole family was always generous in opening their home and being a part of Cohasset." She leaves behind a brother, William Jones of California, sons Robert Fesler, Jr. of Dresden, Maine and Douglas Fesler of Anchorage, Alaska, and daughter Laurie Sherman of Anacortes, Washington. She also leaves 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Sunday June 22 at 2 PM at the Congregational Church in Cohasset. There are no visiting hours. Arrangements have been made by the McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home 781-383-0200.

I grew up next door to Mrs. Festler and would rake for her in the fall. Fond memories of her inviting me in for a sandwich. Also Laurie with the horse and the barn. RIP.

I did so enjoy sitting beside Grethe during our Professional Women's Club luncheons. We shared our memories of visiting Alaska. We shall miss her.

Grethe was a lovely person and I did enjoy meeting and talking with her at meetings of The Professional Women's Club of Boston. She was so very proud of her children and grandchildren and spoke of them often. We will all miss her bright smile and outgoing personality.
