Avis MacDonald

GROTON, CT Avis MacDonald, 92, of Groton, CT passed away October 4th at Groton Regency in Groton. Mrs. MacDonald was born August 22, 1916 in Dorchester. She was the daughter of Harry and Hazel (Delesdernier) Jukes. At the age of 15, she graduated from Rockland High School in 1932. A high-spirited young woman, Mrs. MacDonald worked as a waitress in Massachusetts and Florida as a teenager. She then was employed for many years in the business office of E.T. Wright in Rockland and at the former Newberrys also in Rockland. She married her husband Melvin MacDonald on August 18, 1940 in Rockland. He passed away September 1, 1988. A long time resident of Rockland she moved to Wareham in 1968. Mrs. MacDonald enjoyed many years teaching her children and grandchildren the fine points of card games. In her later years, she was a member of the Wareham Elks where she was noted as an excellent dart player and a member of the Wareham Congregational Church. Mrs. MacDonald moved to Groton, CT in 1998 to be closer to her son and grandchildren. Mrs. MacDonald is predeceased by her brother Harry Jukes Jr. of Rockland and her sister Edith DAmato of Scituate. She is survived by her son, Richard MacDonald and his wife Judy of Niantic, CT her daughter Jean Baranowski and her husband Broni of Montgomery, AL, four grandchildren, Laura MacDonald of Norwich, CT, Dr. Amanda MacDonald and her husband Edward Obarowski of Islip, NY, Jeffrey Baranowski of Prattville, AL and Tara Woods and her husband Chris of Wetumpka, AL; and by her great-granddaughter Bailey Woods. Her funeral service will be Thursday, Oct. 9th at the Chapman, Cole, and Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Agawam Cemetery, Wareham.
