Darrell Smith Obituary

Darrell Davis Smith LACONIA, NH, 79, passed away on October 7, 2008 after a lengthy illness. Born to Allen D. and Amelia (McCulloch) Smith on July 4, 1929 in Eastport, ME, Darrell was raised in Weymouth, MA and attended Weymouth Public Schools. At 12 years of age Darrell started to help the Weymouth Fire Department fight fires; he joined the fire force in 1942, attended Massasoit Community College where taking courses in Fire Science Technology and Management, and achieved the rank of Captain before taking the job of Chief at the Marshfield Fire Department in 1972. He served as Chief until 1979. He was a proud member of the International Assoc. of Fire Chiefs and the Plymouth County Fire Chief's Assoc. In June 1961, Darrell joined the Orphans Hope Lodge of Masons in Weymouth. His Masonic membership was very important in his life. When he retired to Holderness, NH he joined the Mt. Prospect Lodge and rose to Past District Deputy Grand Master of District 8 and served as Deputy Grand Lecturer for the Grand Lodge of NH. He founded a social club for Masons residing in the Taylor Communities in Laconia. He also became a Volunteer Fire Fighter for the Holderness Fire Department. He was a Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 8 of Weymouth, MA through the 1960s. After his retirement, Darrell also worked as a greenskeeper for the Den Brea Golf Course in Sanbornton, NH. Darrell is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Joyce M. (Martin) and his three children, Warren and his wife Michele of Weymouth, MA; Walter and his wife Carlene of Somerset, MA and daughter Donna of Marshfield, MA. He is also survived by his four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A Masonic Service will be held on Wednesday, November 22, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Weymouth United Masonic Lodge, 610 Broad Street, East Weymouth, with refreshments to follow. Mr. Smith,
Sir, i would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of Massachusetts and New Hampshire when you served as a Firefighter. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
