Joseph Mayo Obituary

QUINCY Joseph Coach Mayo of Quincy and Marco Island, Florida, quietly passed away on Saturday September 27, 2008 in Hospice House of Naples surrounded by his family. Mr. Mayo was the loving husband of 46 years of Judy (Shea) Mayo. Born in Quincy on March 26, 1924, Coach Mayo, a first generation American, was the son of the late Paul J. and Syria L. (Nesti) Mayo. He attended Quincy High School, Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, VA, and graduated from Boston University. He served during WWII in the 10th Mountain Division Ski Troops. His training began in Camp Hale Colorado for two years before serving in the Apennine Mountains of Italy for a year. He was a scout for the 10th and participated in the take back of Mount Belvedere in 1945. Coach Mayo was a proud veteran who received a Bronze Star and was also a three-time Purple Heart recipient. Coach Mayo began his football coaching career at Harvard University, before serving on the coaching staff of Boston University. For the next sixty years, his career expanded from college to high school in Massachusetts and Florida. The highlight of his coaching career was the recent service to the Marco Island Pop Warner Football League. In addition to his wife, Mr. Mayo is survived by his two daughters: Angela Piatelli and her husband Gary of Naples, FL and Melissa Williams and her husband Dan of Naples, FL. He is also survived by his sister Veola (Lola) Randall of Quincy, and was the loving father of the late Paul J. Mayo. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday October 15 in St. Josephs Church, 550 Washington St., Quincy at 11am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Coach Mayo will then be laid to rest during a private burial in Arlington National Cemetery in November. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, 917 N. Collier Blvd., Marco Island, FL 34145.

Mr. Mayo,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the U.S. Army during WW II with the 10th Mountain Division-one of toughest and best trained units in the Army in some of the bloodiest fighting in Europe during WW II. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
