Paul Douglas Taylor

MARSHFIELD Paul Douglas Taylor, of Marshfield, MA., died October 16, 2008 at the age of 83. He was born in Braintree, MA. on July 5, 1925 to Mary McLaughlin Taylor (originally from Donegal, Ireland) and Harold J. Taylor (from a long line of New Hampshire Taylor's going back to the late 1600's). He was an active sports participant, playing on both the football and baseball teams at Braintree High School. On graduation his plans for Forestry studies were disrupted by WW ll. He served as a 1st Lieutenant and Squadron Adjunct in the Air Corp, training fighter pilots and a special squadron of Chinese national fighter pilots, as well as overseeing the rehabilitation of released prisoners of war. Paul married Olive M. McDermott of Quincy, MA., on May 10, 1948 and worked as a master carpenter for a number of years, and later as a master construction foreman. During this time (1964-66) he hand-built the home in Marshfield that he had lived in for the past 40+ years. He changed professions, working as a hospital facilities superintendent at Boston Lying-In Hospital for Women (now part of Peter Bent Brigham), then later at Brockton Hospital and South Shore Hospital. He was a very active member of the New England Engineers Society, serving as MA. State Representative, Secretary, Vice-President, and President. After his retirement in 1989 he stayed active with family, his main hobbies (fishing, boating, opera, birding - he had a small town of specialized bird feeders! - and home maintenance), as well as substitute teaching (metal shop, carpentry, auto repair and other) from 2001 - 2007 at the Blue Hills Vocational Education School. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Olive M. (Peg) Taylor; his children, Roger Taylor of NYC and Santa FE, NM; Nancy Taylor and her partner Jim Aldoupolis of Weymouth, MA; Carol Taylor of Hull, MA; Paul Taylor and his wife Kim, of Hanson, MA., his two grandchildren Rebecca and Meghan Taylor; as well as 3 nieces and a number of grandnieces and nephews and their children. Following his example, all his children are active volunteers in their communities. A gregarious, friendly man with a great sense of humor and strong values, he touched many lives and was befriended and loved. He will be greatly missed.
