Ellen Pepper Obituary

Ellen Elizabeth Pepper SCITUATE Ellen Elizabeth (Cole) Pepper, former Scituate Town Accountant of Suncook Pond Apartments, Allenstown, NH died on October 22, 2008 at Pleasant View Retirement Nursing Home, Concord. She was born in Norwell, MA on November 21, 1914, the daughter of James E. and Olive E. (Briggs) Dolan. In 1925, the family moved to Scituate, where she graduated from Scituate H.S. in 1932. She married F. Merlon Cole later that year. She worked as secretary to the Zoning Board of Appeals for several years and then obtained employment at the Scituate Town Hall as clerk to various town departments for a period of five years, after which she was appointed Town Accountant. At the time of appointment, she was the youngest and only person in the State of MA ever to have been appointed to that position with only a H.S. Diploma. She served in that office twelve years, resigning in April of 1952. After her resignation, she married Walter B. Pepper and they moved to Campton, NH. Residing there for twenty years, their next move was to the Concord area. She was a charter member of the former Mayflower Guild, Trinitarian Congregational Church, Scituate. She was also a member of the former auxiliaries, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and the VFW, both of Penacook, NH. She is a present member of the VFW #1631 Auxiliary, and also the Sunset Club, both of Concord, NH. Wife of the late Walter B. Pepper, who died December 21, 1985, she is survived by a daughter Barbara A. Young of Middle Granville, NY, granddaughter Susanna L. Wall of Pittsfield, MA, and a grandson Alan Brown and wife Michele of Londonderry, NH. She leaves three great-grandsons, Michael and Jeffrey Brown , and Lee Trey White, along with several nieces and nephews. She was sister to the late Lois P. Warshaw, Philip B. and Edwin L. Dolan, and Olive M. Ferreira all of Scituate. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, October 27 at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd, Scituate at 9:00 a.m. followed by a funeral service in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Interment in Fairview Cemetery, Scituate. At the familys request please omit flowers, in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of ones choice.
