News Death Notice

SPELLMAN, William Bill C. 70, long time resident of Key Colony Beach, Florida and Urbana, Ohio passed away Tuesday, November 24, 2009, with his loving wife by his side after a very courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Bill was born on June 26, 1939 in Urbana, Ohio to the late Robert L. and Flossie M. Spellman. His familys roots in Champaign County, Ohio extended back to the mid 19th century. He and his wife resided in both Urbana, Ohio and Key Colony Beach, Florida for the last 37 years. He was a 1957 graduate of Urbana High School. After which he attended the University of Cincinnati where he become a long time fan of the UC Bearcats and a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. He finished his college years at Ohio State University where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1961. During his college years he married Carolyn Dorsey on September 2, 1960. Professionally he worked for Armco Steel Company in Middletown, Ohio and the Champaign National Bank in Urbana until 1967 when he joined his fathers company R. L. Spellman Manufacturing. After his fathers retirement Bill became the Chief Executive Officer of the family business. He and his brother, Hugh, continued to operate the family business until his own retirement in 2008 when the business was sold. Within the community, Bill was a long time member of the Urbana Rotary Club, served on Urbana City Council, and a very active member of the Urbana Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed serving the church in any capacity whether it was Treasurer, youth club advisor, or committee involvement. Bills passions were playing golf, traveling, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends. He was a loving, hard working, and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Besides his courageous and loving wife of 49 years, Carolyn L. (Dorsey) Spellman, Bill is survived by two daughters, Susan Saridakis and her husband Mike of West Suffield, CT and Shelly Linkon and her husband Andrew of Atlanta, GA; two brothers Robert L. Spellman of Jonesboro, IL and his wife Susan, and Hugh L. Spellman of Urbana, Ohio and his wife Cynthia; five grandchildren, Samuel Lee, Max William, Timothy George, Agisilaos Jack, and Sophia Lyn; several nieces and nephews and many, many, dear friends. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. in the WALTER & SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 642 S. Main Street, Urbana, Ohio. Burial to follow in Oak Dale Cemetery, Urbana, Ohio. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 2, 2009, from 2:00 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bills name may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice of the Florida Keys, Inc, 92001 Overseas Highway, Tavernier, Florida 33070 or to the First Presbyterian Church, 116 West Court Street, Urbana, Ohio. Bill was loved, honored, and respected by so many people and he will be remembered for touching so many lives. He was one of a kind and he will be truly missed.
