Elsie Mathews Obituary
Age 85, of Stuart St., Horseheads, passed away unexpectedly as a result of an automobile accident July 5, 2008. Elsie was predeceased by her husband, Alfred in 1995; her daughter, Judy Dozier in 1997; and sister, Ruth Johnson in 1988; brother-in-law, Howard Havens in 2008. Her surviving family includes her sons, John (Connie) Mathews of Liverpool, NY, James Havens of Horseheads, NY; grandchildren, Jeff (Karen) Dozier, Heather Allen, Jason (Anamarie) Mathews, Kay Mathews; six great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Norman (Marion) Mathews of Horseheads, NY; sister-in-law, Norma Havens of Mecklenburg, NY; and nieces and nephews. Elsie was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Horseheads. She was a longtime employee of Hardinge Inc. where she worked in the accounting department and also as a switchboard operator. She was also a member of the Hardinge Women's Club. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home, 413 S. Main St., Horseheads, on Thursday, July 10, 2008, from 2-4:00 and 6-8:00 p.m. Friends are further invited to call at the funeral home on Friday from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. when her service will take place at the conclusion of calling hours at 11:00 a.m. with her Pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Ayers officiating. A private family interment will follow in Grove Cemetery, Trumansburg. I was so sorry to hear about Elsie.
She was such a great lady. She attended Calvary Baptist Church when I was growing up and helped with Pioneer Girls. She was alway willing to help us. She was a wonderful women

I just spoke to my cousin, Dorothy Thornton of Horseheads, and she told me she lost her best friend. I had the pleasure to talk to Elsie on 2 occasions, she sounded like a dynamic lady. I am sending by sympathy to her family and friends.

Aunt Elsie: As the older sister to my mother, you were loved and appreciated by all the members of my family. You cared for me in my early years, supported me throughout my life, and your loving presence will be missed. Now that you are with the Lord, He will take care of you forever.

Elsie was a wonderful longtime friend and neighbor of our grand parents on Stuart St., Mamie and Peter Lazoration. She looked after them as well as others in the neighborhood for many years.
What an amazing woman who will be dearly missed! Our thoughts and prayers are with her family.

John, Connie and Elsie's entire family, I wish to send my deepest sympathy to all of you. I have had the pleasure to have met her many years ago and from my first meeting with her I knew what a wonderful woman she was. She will be saddly missed by all that knew and loved her for she had a warm smile and gentle way that made you feel comfortable. She was a kind person and has left a lasting impression on us all. Remember all the great things that she has given to each of ours life and hopefully that will leave you with a smile and a happy tear when you think of her.
