Harry Gilbert Obituary
Of Johnson City, NY, formerly of Elmira, NY, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, July 20, 2008, at home at the age of 61. Harry was born February 2, 1947, the son of the late Peter and Rita (Mcklevis) Gilbert. He is survived by his wife, Doreen C. Gilbert; sons, James E. Gilbert and Andrew T. Gilbert; stedaughter, Angie (Nick) Finlayson; stepson, Jeremy J. West; grandchildren, Amelia and Kathryn; sisters, Ann (Jerry) Ingerick, Ellen Gilbert and Rita Gilbert; brothers, Peter Gilbert and Walter (Suong) Gilbert; also several nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins, numerous friends and many CSEA friends. Harry was a retired caretaker at the Chemung County Fair Grounds, and a former Vice President of Local #808 of Chemung County CSEA. He was an Election Monitor for many years in the Elmira area. Harry was an avid antique collector, spending many weekends at auctions, home sales or flea markets. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting, fishing and skeet shooting. Family and friends are invited to call at Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira on Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a Memorial Service there Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. Father Walter Wainwright will officiate. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family. Those wishing may make memorials to the Cerebral Palsy and Handicapped Children's Association of Chemung County, Inc., 1118 Charles Street, Elmira, NY 14904, in Harry's memory. A "Candle of Remembrance" may be left for the family in Obituaries at www.olthof.com.

I am very sad to hear of Harry's passing. Although I had not seen Harry, his wife and children in years, I have fond memories of Harry behind the Bar at the "Joint" for weddings, playing horseshoes & cards at the July 4th picnic down at the farm, and occasionally running into him around town. My deepest sympathies go out to his wife Doreen, children, brothers & sisters. Second cousin Mike.

i have known harry most of my life as my mother frances married deke gilbert,who adopted me and gave me the gilbert name. he was always nice to me as the years went by and he always told me what a "brat and bully" i was as a kid. but it was all in fun. it was awkward growing up as an adopted gilbert but i wouldn't change a thing. the whole gilbert family has always accepted me and we have shared a good amount of friendship and love. especially my aunt frieda and her children who i was extra close to. god bless harry.

Please accept my deepest sympathies - your cousin, Bill Gilbert. Whenever Harry and I would meet (usually at weddings or funerals) we would always talk about the times when Grandpa Gilbert would take us fishing in the Adirondacks.
