We join you in your sadness. We sure remember Joseph from the times we all went up to Newark. Our thoughts are with you all. Best wishes to Dina, Connie and Sarah and their families.

We often only remember the first time we met a person when that person has had a strong impact on our lives. That is how I feel about Joey Jacobson. I was 11 years old and meeting the brother of my childhood best friend Sarah Jacobson for the first time. I had known Sarah for a short enough time that I knew nothing of her brother but when I went to the house to visit her, there Joey was standing straight and interested behind the screen door. I knew that there was something different about Joey. At some point I learned about Down Syndrome but that is not what I think about when I think about how Joey was different. What I think about is unconditional love, attentiveness and humor. Always with outstretched arms for me and anyone willing to be received, he taught me that I am OK. Memories I have include him graciously holding a bowl of chocolate chip ice cream beyond the melting point so he could “show his friends,” as he told my husband and me, because he was too kind to tell us that he only wanted chocolate ice cream. When a little yellow VW bug drove by he pointed and laughed because that is what the free spirit does, of course, when a funny bug drives by. Friends and family were his life. His friends became his family and I am lucky to have been one of them. Thank you, Dina, for giving us Joey. Thank you, Joey, for sharing yourself so that we might know better how to love each other and enjoy life. Peace.
