Anna Tongate Obituary
(Sassano, Corter)
Of Flannery Apartments in Elmira, formerly of Cottage Drive East, Elmira. Born on July 11, 1933 to Anthony and Lucy Sassano in Elmira, New York, passed away on August 14, 2008 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. Anna was preceded in death by her first husband, Dale A. Corter in 1973 and her second husband, John E. Tongate in 1998; sister, Janet Slawson; and stepdaughter, Lisa York. She is survived by two sons, Paul A. Corter and wife Christine of Horseheads, NY and Daniel J. Corter and wife Jennifer of Elmira, NY; daughter, Kathleen A. Lazeski and husband Gerald of Elmira, NY; eight grandchildren, Kevin J. Lazeski of Johnstown, PA, Shawn D. (Marla) Lazeski of Pleasant Unity, PA, Riane E. Corter, Zachary J. Corter, Ross A. Corter; Leslieanne Marie Corter and Tyler D. Corter, all of Elmira and Grant J. Corter of Alexandria, VA; three great-grandchildren, Blake, Hannah and Sarah Lazeski of Pleasant Unity, PA; niece, Debra Peck and her family of Lowman, NY; sisters-in-law, Beatrice Ulawski of Glendale, CA and Barbara Nielsen of Tulsa, OK. Anna was the owner/operator with her husband Dale of Glider Cab, Co. Anna also worked as a nurses aide in the Chemung County Nursing Facility, retiring after 10 years of service in 1995. Anna was an avid reader and enjoyed periodic trips to the casinos. Anna volunteered at St. Joseph's Hospital and the Flannery Apartments. Family and friends are invited to visit Walter J. Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St. at Washington Ave., Elmira, on Sunday, August 17th from 6 to 9 p.m. Her Funeral Service will be held there on Monday, August 18th at 10 a.m. Rev. Richard Price will officiate. Committal prayers and interment will follow in St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. Flowers are acceptable as well as donations to a charity of one's choice, in her memory.

Anne Marie was my cousin. The last time I saw her was at our cousin's funeral. Although we didn't keep in close contact, she was family and we were deeply saddened to hear of her passing. We live on Keuka Lake in the summer and only heard of her passing yesterday.

To the Corter Family: Was verysorry to hear about your mother. We all grew around the "patch" and we new everyone who lived there. Janet was my best friend . I last saw your mom on March 16,2008 whenI took my mother, Bertha Capozzi back home for her funeral. Your mom came to the wake as I new she would. she often came to visit her when she was visiting at the patch. Ann always smiled and was happy. So sad to have her gone. Kathy, Paul, Danny and family, I am so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. While sitting on my dad's porch the other night, I sat and watched down and across the street to your family home. Remembering all the days and nights we spent as kids playing in the yard and sitting on the fence. Remembering how much fun it was to sit in the kitchen and talk with your mom. The days of Sardines and crackers with your dad. All the days she would run us to school when the weather was bad even though she hated to drive in the snow...Our parents are a wonderful part of us and I want you to know that your parents area wonderful part of your friends lives also. I know I haven't seen her in years but I will always remember what a great lady she was. I will cherish the memories she has instilled in me because she played a wonderful part of my childhood as I am sure she did for all your friends..
God bless Anna....she has earned her place in heaven for the beautiful woman she was to all the lives she touched. I thank you for sharing her with me too..

She came into the store i worked at a couple of weeks ago. When i first looked at her i was so busy i didn't immediatly say hello because i was so surprised to see her there. she called out to me "what's the matter with you? aren't you going to say hi to your cousin?" with a big smile. Anna Marie was a very important part of our family and neighborhood.
