Guy Hartman Obituary

HARTMAN, Guy Leslie, MD
Died at his home in Salt Lake City on August 20, 2008. He was born in Big Flats, New York on September 11, 1922 to Fred Charles Hartman and Ruth Agnes Andrews. A man for all seasons, his enthusiasm and passion for many causes endowed him with a life full of varied interests and friends. Learning from his sister how to read before he entered school put him ahead of all his peers and made him the youngest graduate in all of his school classes. He attended Elmira Free Academy and was an honors graduate from Hornell High School. He was a scholarship recipient and graduated from Alfred University. He received his medical degree in the Army Specialized Training Program at the University of Buffalo. Following an internship at the Jersey City Medical Center he entered active duty in the army, and was assigned to the US Air Force Medical Corps. He spent three years in the Occupation Forces in Germany as a Commanding Officer of the 85th Air Depot Wing Medical Group and Hospital in Erding, Germany. Returning to civilian life he began a medical partnership in the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in Fontana, California. He served a two-year residency in Pediatrics at Los Angeles Children's Hospital. Guy was a pioneer in the prevention of child abuse, and voiced these concerns through the American Academy of Pediatrics, San Bernadino County, and California State Committees on Child Abuse and Neglect. As a writer and speaker on these issues he was known world-wide. Wherever he lived or worked he found time for music. Music was the breath of his every day life; from playing the glockenspiel in the medical school marching band, to becoming regular organist in the Salt Lake Temple. He sang, studied the flute, and became an eager participant in many Early Music consorts. Before there was furniture to fill the living room, he had to have a piano and would tackle duets with any willing companion. A convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he had many callings including Bishop of the Claremont, California First Ward. His favorite calling was that of Scout Master, and as such, he turned a scout-o-rama project into a far-reaching area of pursuit. The creation of a "Sinister Garden" at the clinic where he worked became his effort to teach parents and children about the dangers of many common poisonous plants. Busloads of children were brought to the garden to hear his warnings about castor beans, oleander, and poinsettia, to name a few. He never forgot that he was Social Chairman. Even during his last months in a wheel chair he made attempts to answer the door or invite caregivers to share meals. His sweet smile was remarkable even in his uncharacteristically quiet days at home. Guy was married to Shirley Fenn Baldwin, in Albany, New York on December 28, 1943. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in April 1955. He is survived by his sisters Ellen Russell (Huntington Beach, CA), and Louise Stayer (Big Flats, NY), his wife, and their five children: Eric Vreeland Hartman (Salem, Ut), Fenn Elizabeth Ketchoyian (Salt Lake City, Ut), Christina Louise Fairweather (Yorktown Heights, NY), Peter Bain Hartman (Park City, Ut), and Juliana Erdody (Altadena, CA.) His posterity includes 21 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 11:00 am at the Monument Park Second Ward, 1005 South 2000 East, Salt Lake City. Viewing for friends and family will be held from 9:30 to 10:45 am prior to the service. Graveside service and burial will be on Friday, August 29 at 11:00 am in the Cossayuna Lake Cemetery, Argyle, NY. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the Perpetual Education Fund at [email protected]. If you have memories or stories of moments shared with Guy the family would appreciate hearing from you online at [email protected].

I just learned of Guy's passing and wanted to add my condolences to the family. Guy was a wonderful, energetic being who shared his sense of humor and enthusiasm for a variety of topics with everyone. I feel a very personal loss at his passing and extend my wishes for the Lord's comfort to Shirley and all of his children. What a wonderful person Guy was!! What a loss to us all!

Guy has been a huge inspiration for myself and family. He wrote the most compelling eulogy for my mother when she passed away, and then was available when my brother, Lyle passed away. I seemed as if the 20 years since I had last seen Guy didn't exist. The world has lost one of the truely great ones with his passing. Please know that others share a small part of your grief with your fathers passing. We all loved his smile, his genuine graciousness. We wish you all the best that the Lord has to offer.

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Guy and Shirley over the period of several years at the Oregon Bach Festival through their daughter Tina, my dear friend. I wish all of you comfort and peace as you mourn this immense loss.

Mary and I will long treasure our association with Guy and Shirley and family. They are all choice people and we have missed recent association with them. May the Lord bless them with comfort and a sure knowledge of eternal family life.
With our love,
