Aurelia Campbell Obituary

CAMPBELL, Aurelia B.
Passed away at Bethany Manor on Wednesday morning, August 27, 2008, following an illness. Born here in Southport, August 19, 1914, she was the daughter of George and Gertrude Merriam Bowen. She is survived by her devoted daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Carl Bliss, Elmira; as well as three grandchildren, Kevin Bliss, Elmira, Heather Campbell, Elmira, and Brett (Tracey) Campbell, Savannah, GA; great-granddaughters, Emma and Lexi Campbell; several cousins, including Beatrice McCue and Phyllis Robinson; former daughters-in-law, Sylvia Baxter and Pam Campbell; a nephew, Glen and Barbara Campbell; along with a community of caring and cherished friends, including Yvonne and Michael Bevilacqua. In addition to her parents, Aurelia was predeceased by her husband, Archie Campbell in 1979; a son, David in 2005; sisters, Arthamese Denny in 1982; and Beulah Bowen in 1998. Her passing leaves a great void in the lives of her family members, her friends and neighbors. She was the matriarch of Christian Hollow, which has now lost its historical compass. A woman of extraordinary perception, understanding and memory, she kept track of events throughout her community. A visit to her home would be full of knowledge and history, where she would share stories and photographs. A longtime member of the former Centenary United Methodist Church, now New Beginnings Church, Aurelia influenced young lives as a Sunday School teacher. She was active in the Southport and Ashland Historical Societies. Aurelia loved her home and the hills that surrounded her land. Family and friends will be received at Caywood's Funeral Home and Gardens, 1126 Broadway, Southport, on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, between the hours of 7-9 p.m., and again on Wednesday, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Funeral Services will follow at 1:15 p.m. with Aurelia's friend and neighbor, the Reverend Donald Rockwell, officiating with committal services following in the Gardens. Interment will take place at the family's convenience in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira. A special thank you to Dr. Greenburg and the staff of Bethany Manor for their care and concern during her final days. Aurelia was very civic minded and respectful of New Beginnings Church, the American Cancer Society, Chemung County SPCA and the Southport and Ashland Historical Society's.
