Age 80, of Penn Yan, NY, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 26, at home surrounded by her husband and children. Alice was born and raised in Elmira, NY, and was a longtime resident of Apalachin, NY. She was the beloved wife of 62 years to Harry G. Erway, Jr. of Penn Yan, and the devoted mother of 8 children. She was predeceased by two sons, Michael in 1950 and Tim in 1996. She is survived by her husband, (Slim); and her children: son, Harry G. Erway III (Skip) and Eileen of Penn Yan, NY; daughter, Kathleen and son-in-law, Lawrence Beinert of Williston, VT, and grandchildren, Libbey Beinert of Lowell, MA, and Marcy Beinert of Arlington, MA; daughter, Gail Erway-Haight of Penn Yan and three granddaughters, Claire Harapat and Emily and DeeAna Haight; daughter, Patty and son-in-law, Don Proutey of Clayton, NC, and grandchildren, Julie Rogers, husband, Tim and great-grandson, Timmy of Binghamton, NY, Jason Proutey and wife, Michelle and great-grandchildren, Emily, Jack and Meghan of Binghamton, NY, grandson, Ben Proutey and wife, Garietta of Smithfield, NC, grandson, Joseph Gabello of Vestal, NY, grandsons, Carlos and Joshua Proutey of Clayton, NC; a son, Thomas and daughter-in-law, Margaret Erway and grandson, Derrick of Binghamton; a son, David and daughter-in-law, Sue Erway of Boca Raton, FL, and their children, Holly, her husband, Jerry Sullivan and great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, Jacob and Johnathon of East Stroudsburg, PA, Michelle and husband, Chris Blanda of Raleigh, NC, and Tim and his wife, Jana Bunsic, and great-grandchildren, Aviah and Briony of Morristown, TN, granddaughter, Jocelyn and grandson, Justin Erway of Boca Raton, FL. Alice is also survived by her sisters, Marie Striker of Reston, VA, Carol Wade of Penn Yan, NY, Doris Kiff of Elmira, NY, Helen Campbell of Penfield, NY; and her brother, Mike Lowery of Big Flats, NY. She was predeceased by her sister, Theresa Mallette of Elmira, NY. Alice is also survived by her brother-in-law, Robert Erway of Elmira, NY; sister-in-law, Ellen Tobey (Sis) of Elmira, NY; and brother-in-law, Charles Erway and his wife, Nancy of Satellite Beach, FL. Alice was a longtime member of Saint Margaret Mary's Catholic Church in Apalachin, NY. She was a current member of Saint Michael's Catholic Church in Penn Yan, NY. Alice worked as an operator at New York Telephone Company as well as a bookkeeper for Rosebaums in Johnson City, NY. Alice was blessed with the gift of hospitality and the ability to make everyone who crossed her threshold feel welcome and loved. Alice's love, devotion and faithfulness to her husband, Harry, was rare and precious. Alice was blessed with many friends who loved her, especially her two longtime best friends, Millie Gaddes of Nesquehoning, PA, and Sophie Student of Apalachin, NY. To say that she will be missed is an understatement. She leaves a void in our lives that can only be filled with the love of God. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, 10:15 a.m. from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m., from Blessed Trinity Parish at St. Margaret Mary, Pennsylvania Avenue, Apalachin, with the Reverend Father Bob Ring of Penn Yan presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home Friday from 2-4 and evening 7-9 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until service time at 10:15 a.m. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to all those who have supported them with their love and prayers these past few months.
