Dana Stermer Obituary

STERMER, Dana D.
Age 48, of Curren Rd., in Elmira, passed away in a construction accident on Fri., Sept. 5, 2008. Dana is lovingly remembered by his family including the love of his life, Laurie Bonci; Dana's children, Ryenna (Ryan) Clark of Greenville, SC, James Stermer, Brian Bonci of NYC, NY, Blake Stermer of Elmira and "Abby" his spoiled border collie; mother, Janet "Jeana" Stermer; brothers and sister, Ernie Stermer (Laurie) of Canandaigua, NY, Eric Stermer (Cissy) of Elmira, NY, Renea Rosplock (James) of Erin, NY, Brent Stermer (Peter Marks) of Elmira, NY; grandmother, Ida Strong Bates of Elmira Heights, NY; as well as many nieces and nephews he loved; special friends, Mary Lou Earl (Blake's mother), Robbie and Mary Jo Albee IV and their girls; and devoted friend, Shelly Andrus, who always tried her hardest to keep him in line, organized and on time; aunts and uncles, Frank (Barb) Stermer of Montour Falls, NY, Earl (Cindy) Stermer of Erin, NY, H. Virginia Bailey and Edna Link, both of Elmira, NY. Dana was predeceased by his father, Arthur O. "Todd" Stermer in 1994; grandfathers, Raymond Stermer Sr. and Richard Strong; grandmother, Delia Stermer and Uncles, Ray Stermer, Vincent Link and Charles Walker; aunt, Audrey (Charles) Walker. Dana, a graduate of EFA, achieved his dream of owning his own excavation business, Dana Stermer Construction (Many thanks to all his workers); prior to that, Dana was employed by several local area contractors: his uncle, Earl Stermer, Buster Vanderhoff, Walt Crooker, Bruce Patoka and others, too many to mention. He was also employed by the NYS Department of Corrections at the Elmira Correctional Facility and Horseheads School District. Dana's uncle, Earl Stermer, taught him two of his greatest loves, excavation and how to wrestle. In 1978 Dana went to the NYS Championships. Dana always wore a smile and was easy going. Outside the love of his family and vocation Dana was a member of Fur Fin and Feather and always enjoyed the outdoors including hunting. As an avid outdoorsman, Dana had been ever so excited to bring home a trophy elk from his planned guided hunting tour in Wyoming. Although we miss him dearly, Dana's smile and zest for life will remain in our hearts forever. We are thankful that he found love and died doing what he loved. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home, 413 S. Main St., Horseheads, on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, from 2-4:00 and 6-8:00. A celebration of his life filled with memories and stories will take place at the funeral home on Friday at 10:00 a.m.

Dad, Thank you for your kind hearted ways, your gentle spirit, and your smile because you gave these qualities to me. I'll always have the memories of the times we had together, on the jet ski, swimming at the high school, visiting family, going to the fairs, and when you let me drive the back-hoe. I wish we had more of those times. I'm sorry your gone, I love you and always will. Sincerely, James.

Dad, i miss you and i will ALWAYS love you despite everything that has happened over the years. I am going to miss you coming down to South Carolina to visit and how you would tear up every time we would hug each other goodbye. I never told you but I hated it when you would leave.
I have prayed for you every day since I was little and i trust that God has answered my prayers and that I will see you again one day. I promise to keep in contact with Blake and share my good memories of you with him. We both love you so much!

Dana was a beautiful person and a true believer. We went to school together and kept in touch all these years, only over the phone and my once a year visit to Elmira but he was my friend and I will miss him deeply. I am very sorry for his family's loss and I wish them the strength to go on as that is what Dana would expect and want. I have many great memories and I will miss him deeply so until I get to the other side I will have my memories. We have lost a beautiful person and a great man may we all be blessed with our memories, I will always love him!

I was a classmate of Dana's in 1978 and remember the smile on his face and how he was so friendly to everyone. I can still remember the drive and determination on his face each time he stepped on the mat. May God bless the Stermer family and Dana will always live on in your hearts. My prayers are with you all.

It has been many, many years since I have seen my cousin Dana, I guess when we were kids visiting them on the farm. I feel so sorry for the entire family and hope that his memories live on for many years to come. When someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure. (Nelson Stermer's daughter)

I'm so sad to hear the news about Dana. Dana was a wonderful person that touched many lives in a positive way. There aren't many people in the world like him, that's for sure. I've known Dana for about 32 years. Although, I hadn't seen him in many years, that never changed how much he meant to me. He was a life long friend and I loved him dearly, and still do. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. God Bless.

I moved away from Elmira in 1975 and left many good friends behind. Eric and Dana Stermer were two of those friends. Eric and I were very close and I spent a lot of time at the Stermer farm. We all loved to hunt, fish, wrestle and raise a little hell. Dana was shy in a crowd but when it was just Dana, Eric, and I doing chores in the barn i was always looking over my shoulder for a surprise attach from one of them. Eric and Dana are true and loyal friends and and the world is far to empty of guys like them. I regret not knowing much about the last years of Dana's life but cherish the years I spent with him, Eric,my brother John,George and Mike Gilbert, Tommy and Billy Waters,Dave Orshaw, and the rest of our crazy clan. Looking back it was like living a wild movie. We lived life to the fullest, it was something to behold and for those that weren't there it is hard to explain.

My heart goes out to the family and friends of Dana, he was incredible.

Good hunting Dana and I hope to see you on the other side brother.

I am very sorry to hear of the loss of my cousin, Dana. My earliest memory of him was when our homeroom teacher in 7th grade tried to put us in the same seat because we had the same first initial. We spent the next several years getting to know each other better. Our paths have crossed many times over the years and it was never thought that the last time would truly be the last time. Dana really was a great, fun-lovng person who was living his dream. My love and prayers go to all of you. Please take comfort in knowing that Dana is in heaven watching over you. I am so very sorry for you loss.

We knew Dana because he worked on our property last year for several months, excavating a property that desperately needed it, along with installing new drains. He did alot more work than he actually billed us for...knowing that funds were tight.
