Donald Saltus Obituary

SALTUS, Donald Joseph
WWII Veteran

Age 88, passed through Heaven's Gate on Sunday, October 12, 2008, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Elmira, NY. Donald was born in Elmira, NY on September 18, 1920, the son of Joseph and Alva (Scherer) Saltus who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by his beloved wife, Adeline (Eaton) Saltus, in May of 1999, his brother, Earl Saltus, in June of 2008, and his brother-in-law, George Sayles in August 2003. Don was a graduate of Southside High School and proudly served in the Army Air Force during WWII. He worked many years for the Remington Rand until it was closed. He then worked for Unisys until his retirement. He moved to Seneca Lake where he spent his time building houses. He loved his family, hunting, fishing, Seneca Lake and apple pie. His sense of humor was a joy to all who knew him. After the death of his beloved "Addy", he moved back to Elmira where he resided at Woodbrook. His family would like to extend sincere thanks for the wonderful care and love he received from the staff, management and fellow residents. Don is survived by his two sisters, Lucille Sayles of Pine City, NY and Eileen (Elwin) Jennings of Gillett, PA; his sister-in-law, Mildred Saltus of Van Etten, NY; his nieces and nephews and their spouses: Jayne and Martin Bernhardt of Clifton, NJ, Jim and Reggie Sayles of Horseheads, NY, Susan and Edgar Torres of Tampa, FL, Thom and Mirjam Jennings of Eagle River, AK, Tim and Debbie Jennings of Albany, NY, Ron and Kay Saltus of Cross Plains, TX, Sandy and Tom Holleran of Las Vegas, NV, Mahlon Flood of Ithaca, NY; and many grand nieces, nephews and cousins who will all miss their "Uncle Donnie". Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira, NY on Thursday, October 16, 2008, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Funeral Services honoring his life will be held there following his visitation (4 p.m.). The Reverend Jeffrey Tunnicliff will celebrate Don's services. Interment will take place on Friday, October 17th, at 11:00 a.m. in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 563 Jerusalem Hill Road, Elmira, NY. Eileen ("Mom") and "Aunt" Lucille,

I am sorry to read of "Uncle" Donnies death.

Even though it has been many years since I'd seen him, I will always have fond memories of the July 4th family get togethers at his place on the Lake and his gentle ways.

My thoughts are with you both -

Love goes on forever...1 Corinthians 13:8
