Nellie Beidelman Obituary

BEIDELMAN, Nellie M.
Residing in Bethany Manor Horseheads, NY went home to be with the Lord and Savior on January 21, 2009 at the age of 96. Nellie was born in Elmira, NY on October 1, 1912. She was a charter member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. She graduated from Elmira High School and from Practical Bible Training School (now known as Davis College) as Valedictorian of her class. She also taught there for ten years in the Christian Education Department. Nellie's most enduring legacy was the creation (along with Clarence W. Stewart) in 1945 of Child Character Education from her home in Horseheads, a home donated by the late Mr. and Mrs. George Lee. One of her most challenging contributions to our community was through Child Character Education, Inc., known as Released Time in our public schools. These classes are continuing after 60 years. She was a teacher and director of this outreach. Too, part of Nellie's Child Character was a two week summer camp at Harris Hill. This camp experience is also remembered fondly today by scores of participants. Nellie so enjoyed her work with the children and telling her stories with her flannel boards, that she wrote a charming memoir entitled Memories, the First Fifty Years. Many of Nellie's former students either call or visit when they return to Elmira. Another aspect of Nellie's legacy was the creation of Neighborhood Bible Clubs of which she was quite proud, KYB clubs, Teacher classes and Adult Bible classes. As her sister Edith once said, "You have had a wonderful life!" Nellie agreed with her. She will be missed by many. She was predeceased by her mother, Sadie Beidelman; and her sister, Edith Beidelman. She is survived by many friends and a few cousins. Family and friends are invited to call at Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira/Southport on Monday, January 26, 2009, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with Funeral and Committal Service there Monday at 1:00 p.m. The Reverend James Crupi and Reverend Clifford Proper will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make memorials contributions to the Association for Child Education, Inc., 212 S. Main Street, Horseheads, NY 14845. A "Candle of Remembrance" may be left for the family in obituaries at www.olthof.com

My mom, Inez Swartz, worked with Nellie for many years teaching release time classes. I remember many hours of helping my mom cut out flannel graph pictures. I, too, was a camper and then counselor at Harris Hill. Many, many fond memories of Nellie and Flossie. Thank you Nellie for your life of dedication to the Lord. We will see you again some glorious morning.

I was taught by Mrs. Beidelman as a very young child attending a two room schoolhouse. I remember enjoying the Bible stories and the pictures on her eisel. I'm sorry to hear of her passing, however, her life on earth was complete and time to be with the lord.

There are many of us in the Bentley Creek PA area that remember Miss Beidelman very fondly. She had released time classes at our elementary school for many years. She also led VBS schools for many years. God surely used her many talents in so many ways to bless us.
We will miss her but because of her many of us will meet her again in heaven. May God bless her family.

I praise God for the woman Nellie Beidelman was here on earth and I know she couldn't be happier than she is right now. Harris Hill was a part of my life for 13 years. As a young camper and eventually as a counselor I couldn't wait for August to come each year. The wonderful memories and people I met are still in my thoughts today. I truly believe that everyone who had Nellie in their lives are better people for it.
Sincerely Pam (PJ) Jones Thomas

Nellie was such a part of the first 18 years of my life....Childrens church, VBS, Release time, Harris Hill and just looking across the church and seeing her face week after week. Nellie had a true impact on the Elmira/Horseheads area. No one could tell a story like her. I still wish I could get copies of her stories to keep her missionary stories going. Thanks for your impact on my life. I look forward to seeing you again in heaven. What a faithful Christian woman and role model you were for all of us.

Miss Beidelman was a wonderful teacher of the Bible. Her Bible lessons and her beautiful drawings of Bible stories are fond memories of more than 60 years. She came to Wellsburg Union School and later to Coldbrook Park School to teach us the majesty and power of God and His love for us. Thanks be to God.

Nellie was the first person in my life to tell me about Jesus. My first memory was as a 2nd grader when she came into school with the wonderful flannel graph. I attended her VBS and Harris Hill Camp. What wonderful memories! Today I am70, and walking with Jesus. The angels are rejoicing today and Nellie is sitting at the feet of her Savior.
