Age 86, passed away October 25, 2007 at Homestead Nursing Home. Lester was born on November 14, 1920 in McDonough, NY, the son of Llewellyn and Mary Anne Whitmore and Walter and Anna Barnes and foster son of Maynard and Edna Stoddard. He was a Transportation Supervisor with Penn Yan Central Schools. He was a graduate of Franklin Academy in Prattsburg, NY, a World War II veteran of the US Army Air Division, a member of the Penn Yan Methodist Church, and Ell-D-Van Class, Masonic Lodge in Dresden, and the American Legion. For many years, he sold cars and was known to many as their bus driver. He is survived by two sons, Philip (Mary) Barnes, Watkins Glen, David Barnes, Rochester; grandchildren, Melanie (Keith) Caslin, Steven Barnes, Kerry Hoover, Meagan (Scott) Yaw; one great-grandson, Samuel David Caslin; brother-in-law, Carlton (Marlene) Elling, Geneva; sister, Mary Elizabeth Roark, Coldbrook, NY; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Doris Elling Barnes, whom he married December 6, 1947. She passed away July 26, 2000; several brothers and sisters, including his twin, Chester Barnes in 1999. Friends and family are invited to call on Sunday, October 28, 2007, from 2-5 p.m. at the Weldon Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Monday, October 29, 2007, at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wayne Butler officiating. Burial will be in Bellona Cemetery, Bellona. Memorials may be made to Penn Yan Methodist Church, The Homestead or Soldiers and Sailors Hospital.
