FARMER, Gretchen S.
Hammondsport, NY
Gretchen Louise Sauer Farmer, 74, of Hammondsport, NY, passed away with her children at her side on Saturday, October 27, 2007, at Ira Davenport Hospital. She was born September 11, 1933 in Fort Benning, Georgia, the daughter of Colonel J. Samuel Sauer and Jean Walker Sauer. Her childhood years were spent in Australia, Hawaii and throughout the continental U.S. She was a graduate of Mount Holyoke College with a degree in Political Science and Elmira College with a master's degree in Education. In 1954 she married Channing M. Farmer in Rochester, NY. Throughout her lifetime she worked as an assistant librarian at the University of Pennsylvania, a substitute high school teacher in the Elmira and Corning area, a language instructor in Shanghai, China, an assessor for the Town of Wayne, and a freelance abstract writer. She served on the Board of the Chemung County SPCA and volunteered at the Glenn Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport. Gretchen was a devoted homemaker and her interests included gardening, reading, traveling and playing bridge. A sports enthusiast, she enjoyed playing tennis, ice skating, waterskiing and sailing. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 49 years, Channing (Jack) Miller Farmer; and sister, Sally Sauer Young. She is survived by four children, daughters, Deborah (Patrick) Liedot of Medan, France and Sally (Lawrence) King of Saratoga Springs; sons, David (Susan) Farmer and Robert (Mary) Farmer of Hammondsport; and grandchildren, Thomas, Jonathan, Matthieu and Sarah Liedot, Emily and Megan Farmer, and Sydney, Lauren and Jillian Farmer. Caring for her friends and family, especially her grandchildren, brought her great joy. She will be sadly missed. Friends may call on the family at LaMarche Funeral Home in Hammondsport on Friday, November 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Consistent with Gretchen's wishes, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the college of your choice or to the Glenn Curtiss Museum, 8419 State Route 54, Hammondsport, NY 14840.

Debbie, Rob, David and Sally,
Very sorry to hear about your mother passing away. I know you will have many great memories of her as she was a wonderful lady. I so enjoyed you sharing in my parents 50th wedding anniversary a couple years back. May you find comfort in knowing what a great family she raised and that you have each other to share it with.

David,
I remember your mother as often coming into the office and talking to me about you and how you were doing. She was always busy, but not so busy to say "Hi" or just to let you know she remembered you. David, I remember you as being very studious (Bright) and hope and am sure that you have achieved your goal in life. I may be wrong, but I thought you had gone on to Cornell. Sincerely, Charles Millard, Counselor

Bob Kearney here Dave. Sorry so much to hear about your Mom. I remember going over to your house in Big Flats and she was always there. You and I are the only guys I know to have ever had a Booniebike. I don't keep in touch with Jon Dulude but still think back about you two from time to time.
Again, sorry to hear about your Mom.

Bob
