Sheldon Hunt Obituary

HUNT, Sheldon Kenneth Jr.
Sheldon was a longtime resident of Horseheads, NY. He was born in Hoboken, New Jersey on February 14, 1939 to Sheldon K. and Jeannette (Federico) Hunt Sr. He passed away on November 18, 2007 at St. Joseph's Hospital after a long bout with Cancer. He credits the excellent medical treatment received from the J.P. Wilmot Cancer Center in Rochester, NY, the Guthrie Oncology Center in Corning, NY, and the prayers of his family and many friends for his life extension after being diagnosed in 2002. He had a lifelong interest in all things automotive, vintage aircraft, and the shooting sports. He loved classical, opera, and jazz music and in particular the happiness of Dixieland. He was predeceased by his parents, his young son, John William Hunt, and his infant granddaughter, Gracie May Hatch. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Maryellyn (Hogan) Hunt; his children, Sheldon K. and Laura (Laponsky) Hunt III of Newport, Oregon, Joseph A. Hunt of Horseheads, NY, Richard F. and Barbara (Klein) Hunt; and granddaughters, Alyssa, Emily, Megan, and Sara Hunt of Big Flats, NY, Jennifer L. (Hunt) and Michael Hatch; and granddaughters, Landyn and Rylee Hatch of Pine City, NY; his sister and brother-in-law, Jeannine M. (Hunt) and George Stone of Millerton, PA; his brother and sister-in-law, Harold F. and Rita (Augustine) Hunt of Greece, NY; nephews, Mark, Peter, Paul, and Tim; nieces, Dyann, Nadia, Diane, Christine, and Susan; several grandnieces and grandnephews, uncles, aunts, and numerous cousins. Sheldon was a veteran of the USAF. He was a member of the 1009th SWS. While a member, his unit was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster. He was honorably discharged in September 1960. He was employed in various engineering and management positions with "General Electric" in Burlington, VT, "Technical Operations Inc." in Burlington, MA, "The Flow Corporation" in Fort Belvoir, VA, "Westinghouse" and "Imaging and Sensing Technology" in Horseheads, NY. He retired from "IST" in 2002 were he was the Director of Business Development in charge of acquisitions, divestitures, and licensing and intellectual property. Sheldon was the Chairman of the Board of "Creative Orthotics and Prosthetics", a Board member of "Saint Josephs Health System Inc.", and a past Chair of the local "SCORE" chapter. Rodman Racing Team". Sheldon and Maryellyn were members of the Chemung County Historical Society and the Clemens Center and were frequent contributors to local charities. Both his USAF service and corporate assignments gave him the opportunity to travel the world, which he greatly enjoyed. Maryellyn claimed he knew where the best restaurants were located in all of the cities and towns that he visited. After retiring, he believed his volunteer work was a way to share his expertise with the community that nurtured him these many years. Maryellyn, we are so saddened to hear of Sheldon's passing. Sheldon was a man of many talents as you know. I could always rely on Sheldon's technical and business advice at IST. But most of all, I remember Sheldon's undying optimism, hope, and perseverence in all of his endeavors, and there were many. Whenever I am faced with situations where there are a variety of opinions on how to handle a problem, I always remember Sheldon saying to me: Phil, there is more than one way up the mountain. That was a reminder to me to let other opinions weigh equally. God bless him and keep him. And God bless you and your family Maryellyn. We will all miss him.
