Carole Bland Obituary

Published by Star Tribune from Aug. 26 to Aug. 27, 2008.
Bland, Carole J. Age 62 of Plymouth, passed away August 23, 2008 from pancreatic cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Georgene Martin and her sister, Sharon Martin. She is survived by Dick, her husband of 40 years, as well as by a world of wonderful friends and relatives. Carole's entire professional career was spent at the University of Minnesota Medical School, where her impact was deep and profound. She and Dick met at Augustana College in Sioux Falls as undergraduates, where they developed a uniquely close relationship with a number of people who have remained close friends today. Carole went on to receive her Ph.D from the U of M in 1974, and remained on the Faculty in the Medical School since that time. Most recently Carole was Assistant Dean for Faculty Development in the Medical School. Carole's impact on the development of academic professionals in medical departments – both through her personal relationships as well as professional endeavors – cannot be overstated. A natural mentor, she was Director of Clinical Research Fellowships for the Department of Family Medicine and principal architect for mentorship programs for the Medical School. She was also the co-director of the Leadership/Mentorship Component of the Committee on Excellence in Women's Health. She loved research and education. She served as a member of the Board of Trustees for Augustana College since 2002. In addition to her numerous scholarly journal articles, she authored several educational books on faculty development and research, including one about to be published entitled "Mentoring and Being Mentored: Effective Collaboration Throughout an Academic Career". She received multiple awards and recognitions for outstanding achievement during her career. Earlier this year, she received the Distinguished Career Award from the American Educational Research Association (AERA). In 1999, she received the Outstanding Research Publication Award from AERA following the publication of one of her books. She was the recipient of the Hames Research Award from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, awarded annually to one person whose career accomplishments significantly advanced research. She was a bold advocate, supporter and mentor of women in education – "Well behaved, shy and quiet women rarely make history" was one of her favorite sayings. She was loving, thoughtful and gracious to everyone. She was unfailing in bringing a positive outlook to every situation. And dogs, oh how she loved dogs, especially her white German Shepherds. She will be greatly missed. A private ceremony is planned for family and close friends, and a celebration of life will be held in a few weeks. Arrangements Cremation Society of Minnesota. In lieu of flowers, send gifts to Augustana College or the Minnesota Medical Foundation, in memory of Carole J. Bland.

Carole was my best friend since first grade. She is godmother to my two children and my daughter bears Carole's first name as her middle name. I did not know her on the academic side but from her personal side she was a real sweetheart and always there to listen or help. The memories keep rising to allow me to relive the good times we had growing up and there were many.

I remember Carole as a young and vivacious woman at Augustana College. She always had a smile on her face. I have seen Carole and Dick once in a while over the years since college. Both were very successful and yet very down to earth as individuals.
Dick, my condolences to you especially for your loss is great. Yet always remember you have been blessed to have so much joy over the years.
Sincerely
Cheryl Ryland, Class of 68

Although I never met Carole, I admired her work. Carole's writings influenced my career, especially my mentoring, early on. HRSA Faculty Development Grants at Virginia Commonwealth University were obtained using her principles. She will be sorely missed by the professional community she helped build.

Dick and family,

My brother David who lives in Minneapolis sent me Carole’s obit and asked me if I remembered her from our college days at Augustana. Vividly! She was a bright, vibrant, charming and beautiful kid whose image immediately returned to my mind. She was always a sweetie to me although she was ‘way above my league in the college “coolness” spectrum. With that impression of her lingering with someone who hasn’t had contact with her for forty years, I can only imagine the impact that Carole has had on you and everyone else who had the pleasure of knowing her for the last forty years—and the loss you endure today. Please know that Carole will not be forgotten by anyone who knew her. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Carole was a superb scholar! To this day, I still appreciate and use the educational skills she taught me more than 20 years ago. She improved medical education for so many! Sincere condolences to Dick.

Carole was a great friend and colleague for nearly 20 years. I will miss her daily. She was a great scholar, a visionary, and a warm, loving person. Her contributions to the ACE Fellows Program and to the development of the Bishop Fellows Program will be part of her significant legacy. I always looked forward to spending time with her; her positive attitude affected all of us. She will be missed by many.

I had a good fortune to get to know Carole and spend some time with her while spending my year of ACE Fellowship at the University of Minnesota. She was an outstanding and thoughtful mentor and colleague. She was a very caring individual. Her loss will be felt by all who came to know or work with her even for shorter duration. May God bless her the eternal peace and happiness.

I knew and worked with Carole through the ACE Fellows Program, specifically the Professional Development Committee. Her insights, perspective, and ability to vision about issues related to higher education were exceptional. But then again not much about Carole was not exceptional. The world and higher education certainly loss a wonderful scholar, friend and colleague.

Carole's passing represents a significant loss to the ACE Fellows Program and she will be sorely missed. She will be remembered for her ready and easy smile, her keen wit, her gracious demeanor, her astute observations and her commitment to the Fellows program was an inspiration to all of us. She touched all who knew her and her memory will be kept alive when we come together. I offer my deepest sympathy to her husband Dick, her family and lifelong friends.

Carole was a stunning and brilliant example of what her generation of women contributed to the science and practice of educational research. At her April 2008 award presentation at the American Educational Research Association in New York, which she attended by interactive phone, Carole was feted for her long and distinguished career. She interacted with her many colleagues that night who had an opportunity to express their gratefulness for her wise counsel, her mentoring of the association, and her continuing contributions to the field that set examples for the rest of us. I celebrate her life of meaning-making; it is her legacy.
