Spencer Green Obituary

December 29, 1982 – September 28, 2007

On Friday, September 28, 2007, our wonderful son and brother, Spencer Lee Green, went to be with the Lord, following a difficult five-year battle with cancer. Spencer was a 2001 graduate of Bryan High School. He was attending Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Okla., when cancer forced him to come home for treatment.

Spencer was born on December 29, 1982 in Glenwood Springs, Colo., and moved to Bryan in 1988. He enjoyed making people laugh and was voted by his classmates to be awarded the senior superlative, "Personality Plus." In high school, he ran track, specializing in the hurdles under the great coaching of David Greeno.

Spencer had a love for Christ and encouraged others to pursue faith in Christ. He was a leader in his youth group and played drums and guitar at the Bryan Church of the Nazarene, where his father serves as pastor.

Spencer's great passion was music. He wanted to write music and travel and perform. He was able to do that for a while with a band he formed called "So Long Good-byes." Some of his songs can be heard on his website, wwww.bootlegspencer.com. Additionally, his artwork and thoughts are included. More of Spencer's music can be heard at www.myspace.com/spencergreen.

Carrying on Spencer's memory in their hearts will be his parents, Lonnie and Christie Green of Bryan; brother, Scott of Bryan; grandparents, Gene and Marietta Post of Stillwater, Okla., and Bob and Jo Green of Bothell, Wash.; along with many uncles, aunts and cousins.

Friends are invited to greet the family at a viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, October 1, at Church of the Nazarene at 2122 E. William J. Bryan Pkwy. in Bryan (across from the Post Office). A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, October 2 at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: "The Spencer Green Memorial Fund" and mailed to the Church of the Nazarene, 2122 E. William J. Bryan Pkwy., Bryan, Texas 77802.

The family wishes to thank all of their friends who have provided so much support and love and prayers during this difficult time.

We loved Spencer and are saddened that he had to leave us. His music and his voice will continue to be heard for in everything he faced he was "real" and yet was such a witness of faith, hope and love. He will be missed!

I knew Spencer in High School and saw him once or twice on my visits home to Bryan. When I did, he always had a smile on his face and a light in his heart. I did not know about any of his struggles. He was a wonderful man and put up an amazing fight. My thoughts are with his family and our community during this tragic loss.

I was fortunate to be in class with Spencer at SNU. I remember for a class project in Psychology of Religion he shared the story of his faith struggle while going through cancer treatment. His narrative was deeply powerful, poetic, and inspiring. I will never forget his courage, his humanity, and his faith.

The thing I remember the most about Spencer was his sense of humor. I remember the time he was singing the beginning song from the Lion King in the cafeteria. that was hilarious! And what a talented singer and songwriter he was. I loved his songs because of how raw and honest they were.
Even though he is no longer with us, he is in a happier place with God. We will miss you, Spencer.

I remember you from track. You were the brightest thing out on the field and you could turn a bad day into the best day with your jokes and laughter. I will always remember you.

Spencer was an energetic, exuberant guy who will be greatly missed. I will never forget the lip sync when he and Tyler Jenkins did "Hero" by Enrique Iglesias, that song makes me nostalgic every time I hear it, and always will! We'll miss you Spencer. I hope you're having fun with Jesus!

Spencer was in my high school English class. He was everyone's favorite. I remember when he dressed up like a girl to help the girls powder puff team win. They wouldn't have won without him. Always clever and funny and never a dull moment.

I have been attending Camp Olympia 10 years this coming summer & i have had the joy to interact with Spencer numerous summers. Now becoming an employee of camp i know that my faith was only made stronger time after time again when with Spencer. When i was younger Spencer would sing to my friends and i and help us through issues at home. He was more than just a positive influence, he was a true leader and shepherd for those who were stumbling with their faith. He will be greatly missed. His passion and love for others and Christ will live on through his music. Much love & condolences to those who have encountered this great man.

I had been out of touch with Spencer for a number of years and only recently heard of his sickness. I used to love to go through his line at Winn-Dixie because of his great heart and to get updates on his going to the Nazarene College. He was so happy to be able to do that. I have loved listening to his music and regret that I lost contact with him. I know that God will uphold you through this difficult time.

I had the privilege of knowing Spencer since 7th Grade. We ran track together and laughed together. He was so kind. He was a lover of Jesus Christ and that was so amazing to see in a young man my age. It has left a lasting impression on me to this day. I cant wait to see him in Heaven and sing praises to our King together.

Spencer was absolutely electric and a true servant of our Lord. I write this entry as a life (of many) profoundly changed by Spencer Green. I will always carry the memories I was blessed to create with Spencer in my heart, careful not to forget how precious he was. And I will live out what he taught me as I continue to serve others the way he faithfully did!

Spencer made a lasting impression on me many years ago. I met him before he had even made it to the teen age years. His friendly, unselfish, loving personality always was his way of life. He will dearly be missed. It's been years since I've seen him, but I still remember him like it was yesterday. He may look different in his older years, but I am 100% sure his heart and personality never changed.
