Mae Augustine Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Aug. 10, 2008.
AUGUSTINE, Mae Dickerson, 82, of Richmond, Va., died August 9, 2008. She is survived by her sister, Doris Dickerson Rowlette and husband, Anthony; her husband of 58 years, Harry H. Augustine Jr.; her daughter, Florence A. Chaffin; and three sons, Harry H. Augustine III, Carter D. Augustine, and John S. Augustine; and five grandchildren. Mrs. Augustine grew up in Amelia, Va. and came to Richmond to attend Richmond Polytechnical Institute (RPI). She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree and became a registered nurse from the school of nursing at Stuart Circle Hospital. Mrs. Augustine was an active member of the Richmond Horticultural Society which established the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden on the grounds of Bloemendaal. Once the Botanical Garden was established, she was one of a core of volunteers and went on to serve on its Board of Directors. She was also a member of several garden clubs, president of the Virginia Orchid Society and an avid orchid collector and grower. Graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, August 11 at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Healing and Hope Through Science Program at the Duke Gardens in Durham, N.C. (http://www.healingandhopethroughscience.org/) , a program started by her granddaughter or the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond, Va. (http://www.lewisginter.org/support/donations.php).

Rachel just told me of Mrs Augustine's passing. I'm so sorry Harry. Living up here places me out of touch with Richmond. By the way the answer to your question each time you see me my friend is "It's going". Take care my friend. My prayers are with you.

Harry, Doris and families:

When we think the beautiful bloom had faded, we understand nothing can remove the beautiful flower that remain in our hearts and lives forever. I have many fond memories of years past, and I know that you have a lifetime of them to carry you through this time. Just know that as the bloom lives on in each of you it will never fade. You miss her because of the love you had for her. Peace to each of you.
