LYNCH, Helen Idella Ricketts, 84, of 505 Franklin Tpke., died unexpectedly Sunday, August 10, 2008, at Danville Regional Medical Center. Born January 26, 1924, in Danville, she was the daughter of Reuben Edward Ricketts and Annie Marie Jones Ricketts. Mrs. Lynch was a lifetime member of Third Avenue Christian Church. She was well-known for her pristine uniform, bright smile, and caring nature when she worked as a school crossing guard at Stonewall Jackson Elementary School during the 1950s and 1960s. Mrs. Lynch and a few select others were the first females working as meter maids for the Danville Police Department, and she worked as a Deputy Constable for the City of Danville. She was also a member of Akansa Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. Her favorite passions were her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her longtime penpals, as well as writing and sharing her poetry. On January 31, 1942, she eloped with James Lee Lynch. In addition to her devoted and beloved husband of the residence, she is survived by a daughter, Sylvia Lynch Matthews and husband, John, of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; a son, James Lee Lynch Jr. and wife, Nancy, of Boydton, Va.; two brothers, Ray E. Ricketts of Richmond, Va., and Robert "Danny" Ricketts of Danville, Va.; one sister, Elaine R. Gibson of Ringgold, Va.; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; beloved aunt, Katie J. McKinney; and uncle, Austin E. Jones of Danville. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lynch was predeceased by a daughter, Betty Jo; a granddaughter, Jo Michelle Matthews; and a sister, Marion Lewis Cook. A celebration of her life will take place at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13, at Third Avenue Christian Church, with Rev. Freddy Vicks officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. Uncle James and famiily,
We are sorry for your loss, and are sorry we were not able to get up for a visit. I guess we get busy with our own families and time gets away from us. I will always remember my Aunt Idella for her pen pals, and her love of letter writing, we used to do so much of it when I was younger. I also enjoyed the many chats we used to have at the old Kinzer Ave. house. May God be with you in this time of mourning and with Sylvia, Jimmy and the rest of the family.
Love, Darlene Lynch Gould, Patrick, Madison and Jared Gould

I didn't know Mrs. Lynch by name. I remember talking to her one day and she complimented me on the flowers in my yard. How pretty they were when she looked out of her kitchen window. I would see her sometimes when I walked my dog and she would speak whenever I saw her. She seemed like such a nice person. I only found out today that she had passed. Please know that you and your family have my husband's and my sympathy. We live on the corner of Skyline and Courtney. Our thoughts are with you.

When I think back on my days as a student at Stonewall Jackson School, Mrs. Lynch immediately comes to mind. She was a constant in a child's life by being protective of us, always smiling, giving a hug as needed and calling each of us by name. How wonderful a life lived that she touched so many lives in such a positive and loving manner. I know she will be greatly missed.

My husband and I both were children that attended Stonewall Jackson and were safely ushered across the street everyday by to us then, was Mrs.Lynch. She always had a smile on her face and made the long walk to school seem worth while. She was also a neighbor for many years. We later as adults, became friends and pen pals. We will miss her. Our prayers and sympathy to James and all her family. Larry & Erma Jane Barbour

We loved Dale for her winning smile, her love of beauty, and for the care she showed towards all. Her talents and great love of writing were well known among family, friends, and the Danville community. We will surely miss that kind sweet voice saying, "Hi, this is Dale. Called to see how you're doing."

I was one of those many children that Mrs. Lynch greeted daily with her wonderful smile and a hug for all of those she could manage as she stopped traffic for us to safely cross the street. Her wonderful smiling face and kind words each and everyday as I went to and from school is one I have always remembered. Her life is certainly one to be celebrated as I am sure I am only one of many students that she touched with her positive attitude, even on those days when the rain was pouring. She will always have a special place in my heart and bring a smile to my face when I reflect on my days at Stonewall Jackson Elementary School. May God be with each of you as you celebrate her life.
